The University’s resident ensemble celebrates Bangor University’s first 125 years through performances of music composed by, among others, Bangor graduate Simon Rigby, and by the former Professor of Music at Bangor, William Mathias.

Internationally-renowned Irish singer Mary Black’s career has spanned over 25 years from her early days in Dublin folk clubs through ever-escalating success with seven platinum solo albums.  Her ground-breaking album No Frontiers in 1989achieved triple-platinum status and made her a star on both sides of the Atlantic. 2008 marked the 25th anniversary of Mary's first solo album. To mark the anniversary a double compilation album, "25 Years / 25 Songs," was released, going straight to no.1 in the Irish charts where it remained for 5 weeks. A seminal figure in Irish musical history, she has recorded and performed with Van Morrison, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris and many more,  and attracts large and enthusiastic audiences  all over the world.

 

 

Born and raised in the small village of Llangristiolus in the heart of the Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Môn) off the North Wales coast, singer-songwriter Meinir Gwilym has established herself as one of the best selling Welsh language artists ever.

Super Furry Animals are Wales' most well known rock export. Since their formation in 1993, they have gone from strength to strength with Nation and World wide tours . Currently signed to  Rough Trade Records 2009 sees SFA back on the festival circuit and celebrating the release of their 9th studio album Dark Days/Light Years, which is a glorious technicolour journey into the mind of Super Furry Animals. Since 2007's 'Hey Venus'  the band have been keeping busy with their various side projects including Daf and Guto's acclaimed work as part of The Peth with Rhys Ifans, Cian's forthcoming Acid Casuals releases on their Som Bom label and of course Gruff's Mercury nominated work with Neon Neon.

  • A celebration of the University’s cultural diversity and international profile over 125 years,  4.00pm (Bangor Cathedral)

  • Launch of the Bangor Pontifical Project, 5.15 pm (Cathedral), with a presentation and reception jointly hosted by the Cathedral and the University. All are most welcome. Other events will also be organised by University Schools, including the School of Creative Studies & Media, which has a “Dr Who” event on 28 October at 2pm.
A School of Chemistry lecture by Sir John Meurig Thomas  FRS,  will take place on 23 October, 4.30pm (Prichard-Jones Hall) (sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry).
