Trading bell sounds to launch investment competition

stock market challengeStudents from across North Wales region will soon be experiencing the excitement of the trading room floor ‘virtually’ first hand – thanks to a Bangor University initiative called Stock Market Challenge.

The competition will give over 100 Year 12 pupils the chance to experience the excitement of buying and selling shares on a live trading floor. The initiative not only teaches young people how the financial markets work but encourages them to develop key skills such as communication, problem-solving, decision making, teambuilding, and negotiation.

Staff from the university will be taking part as traders running the dealing pit and will be on-hand to offer advice and guidance to pupils and students interested in a related degree course at the university.
The pupils and students will work in small teams to trade in shares and foreign currency. Each team will start with £15,000 in ‘virtual’ cash to invest by interpreting and analysing information from the stock market.
The simulated live trading will take place over a two-hour period, during which time the students will build a portfolio of shares and currency by making decisions about when to invest and when to sell. The team with the highest portfolio at the closing bell wins.

The project is not just about teaching young people about the financial markets – it’s much, much wider than that. It’s about encouraging them to work in a team to develop their communication skills and their decision making ability – skills which will be vitally important to them when they enter higher education and the world of work, whichever career path they ultimately choose.

Professor Phil Molyneux, Head of Bangor Business School said, “At Bangor Business School we think it is essential that we focus on developing the qualifications and skills of our young people, to ensure the appropriate skills base is in place to take advantage of the job opportunities now and in the future. Initiatives such as the Stock Market Challenge provide us with an opportunity to introduce the university to young people whilst also helping our next generation of business leaders to consider a high value qualification in finance, banking or accounting.”

The event is organised by the College of Business, Social Sciences & Law at Bangor University.

Bangor Business School’s IBM success

imageThis year our IBM Business Challenge teams have yet again done us proud.  Last year we entered three teams, one of which made it through to the semis.  This year we entered four teams that were put together following a formal and rigorous interview process, of which we had over forty applicants. Our four teams were led by Sarah Graham, Henry Ye, Chris Coe and Leah Jones.

This year’s competition got tougher with all universities ‘upping their antes’ and entering more teams. Out of the 250 teams in Round 1 only the top 80 teams went through to the semi-finals.  Dr Clair Doloriet of Bangor Business School said: “This year all four of our teams made it through, which when compared with the likes of Liverpool University who entered twelve teams (with six going through) demonstrates the quality, commitment and determination of our teams.”

“The semi finals were held over one day at 10 different venues around the UK. These were extremely competitive with places changing right up to the last decision period. A wild card element was introduced into this years semi-finals with two separate ‘oligopoly’ markets (consisting of four teams each) competing against one another. As the organisers emphasised, all semi-finalist are runners-up as they have been extremely successful to come within the top third of this tough UK-wide competition.”

imageThe results of our teams are as follows: Solihull semis: Sarah Graham’s team coming in 6th place and Chris Coe’s team coming in at 4th place; Newcastle semis: Leah Jones’ team came in 3rd place. Surrey semis: Henry Ye’s Team came in at 6th place.

Finally some feedback we received from the event organisers sums up just how excellent our teams have been: “I just want to let you know what a credit your team were to the University. They did superbly, their presentations were great and they were enthusiastic and professional. I had secretly hoped for them to win but they really did put up a great fight!”

The Developing Association between Wales and the UAE

Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed al NahyanA member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family has achieved outstanding success in his PhD degree awarded by Bangor University's Business School.

After gaining his MPhil at Cambridge University, Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, enrolled on a PhD programme at Bangor Business School undertaking research in "Natural Resources, Economic Development and Security in the United Arab Emirates", supervised by Dr David Law and Professor Phil Molyneux, Head of the Business School.

The timing of Sheik Hazza bin Zayed al Nahyan's award coincided with a milestone in the history of Bangor Business School of being officially rated the No 1 department in the UK for Finance and Accounting Research, according to the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Following his viva voce, Sheikh Hazza commented: "I inherited my Royal title but I am very glad to have gained my PhD independently. I have enjoyed the friendly and supportive atmosphere at Bangor, the encouragement of my family and the support of my advisor, Dr. Walid Al-Dargazelli."

Reflecting on Sheikh Hazza's success, Dr David Law said: "Sheikh Hazza was a very good student, who was especially impressive in his articulate defence of his wide-ranging PhD thesis in the final viva voce examination. I am sure that his work will enable him to make a substantial contribution to the future development of the UAE."

UK citizens will be most familiar with another member of Sheikh Hazza's family, his uncle Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City Football Club, which is managed by the Wales ex-International footballer Mark Hughes, who is coincidentally an Honorary Fellow at Bangor University. Sheikh Hazza himself is not merely a successful academic; since childhood he has also been a keen sportsman, with especially active interests in falconry and horse-riding. In 2005 he won the World Championship in endurance horse-riding.

Bangor Business School also enjoys close ties with other countries on the Arabian peninsula. Students funded by the King Abdul Aziz Scholarships of Saudi Arabia enroll on Masters degrees in Accounting, Banking and Finance. Bahraini students also enroll every year on Banking and Finance bachelor degrees through a partnership agreement with the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance. Also members of the Qatari Al-Thani royal family have also graduated from Bangor University in recent years

Bangor Business School's recent launch of a suite of MA and MSc degrees in Islamic Banking and Finance has proved to be extremely successful, attracting students not only from the Gulf States but also from a number of Islamic banking organizations.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Sheikh Hazza's uncle and President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, helped to fund the Centre for Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, Lampeter in 1997.

" This is a remarkable achievement", said Mr Wigley. " I want to pay tribute to Professor Ted Gardener and Professor Phil Molyneux who have led the school over recent years, to this pinnacle of sucess."

Bangor Rankings

  • In the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) June 2005 survey of 10,000 UK university students, Bangor was ranked 12th overall in the UK for its 'Student focus'; number 1 in the UK for being 'most helpful' to first year students; and number 8 for the perceived quality of its campus. This shows clearly that the 'Bangor experience' is highly valued by students.
  • In The Guardian, 2nd May 2006, Bangor was ranked 38th overall in the UK University Sector.  This is 19 places up on last year (ranked 57) and 40 places up on the year before (when we were ranked 78).  In Economics, Bangor was ranked in the 'Top 20' UK Universities.  Reproduced below is The Guardian's profile of Bangor.

'Bangor, University of Wales
If you're looking for safety, fresh air and a friendly vibe, Bangor is a great choice.  The University is in a small town, close to the mountains and the sea, providing an ideal location for outdoor sports: rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, sailing and surfing are all popular.  The cost of living and the crime rate are both low.  Opportunities for part time work are plentiful, and the careers service is excellent.  Current developments include a £5m building for environmental sciences and a £10m business and management centre.'

  • Bangor comes out tops again

A survey of the best student-rated university towns and cities in the UK according to the facilities and location has Bangor as one of the best places in the country. The Survey asked students to rate their university and location according to the following categories: going out, shops, transport links, community and facilities.

Bangor scored the second highest score of 60%, beaten by only eight other locations.  Overall, it appears that the north of the UK fares better than the south and south east.

"This is not new information to us!" commented Carys Roberts, Head of Student Recruitment.  "Bangor University is based in one of the most fantastic parts of the UK and many of our students come here to take advantage of the mountains and sea where a whole range of outdoor activities offer themselves.  Bangor is also a friendly, compact and relatively safe community in which to live and study.  These are all 'pluses' when added to the excellent teaching that we offer", added Carys.

The survey was carried out by Accommodation for Students website, and included ratings from students from over 70 universities.

  • Bangor is positioned 15th in the UK within the THES 'Access Elite' group of universities - a composite ranking of widening access (attracting students from all backgrounds), teaching and research quality.
  • As a university, we are consistently ranked in the UK 'top 10' for the number of KTPs (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) that we run with businesses and other external organisations. These KTP schemes are designed to transfer expertise and share knowledge between the university sector and outside businesses and other organisations.
  • The Business School is one of only two in Wales that obtained a top 5 score in the last UK RAE (Research Assessment Exercise).  Bangor has an established international reputation for its research work in banking and financial studies.
