International Students
Many International students are entitled to do some part-time work whilst they study in the UK . However, this is not the case for every international student, and even if you are permitted to work, there are certain restrictions on the type of work you can take and the number of hours you can work. Further information regarding employment regulations can be found here.
National Insurance (NI) Number
- To work in the UK you will need a National Insurance number.
- If you do not have an NI number, you will need to apply for one if you are applying for paid work. To obtain a National Insurance number telephone 0845 6000 643 (if you are partially sighted, have hearing difficulties or require additional assistance telephone 0845 6000 644).
- For further information please read our Obtaining a National Insurance Number (PDF) information sheet.
You may be invited to attend an Evidence of Identity interview with Jobcentre Plus Caernarfon
Paying Income Tax
If you are planning to work in the holidays only and you know your income will not exceed the personal allowance, you can ask to sign a P38 to stop tax being deducted as you earn.
However, if you intend to work during term time you should not fill in a P38, even if you will not exceed your personal allowance.
If you pay tax and do not reach your personal allowance in the tax year (or only go over a bit), but have paid tax on all your earnings, you should ask the tax office for a rebate form.
