Young Scientist Symposium 2007
The Young Scientist Symposium 2007 (North Wales Local Section) was well attended, attracting students and industrialists from the North Wales Area. Guest speakers included Dr Samanth Gardner, Chemicals Northwest, discussing Technolgy Transfer, and Bryn Jones, UWB, who gave a brief presentation on Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Dr Ieuan Roberts discussed his role in exploiting intellectual property owned by Excelsyn as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate, and Richard Lowe from Dulas Solar gave an insight into the basics of solar photovoltaics and news from the industry.
This energy theme was continued by student speakers: Rachel Rowlands - A multi-variant investigation of CdTe photovoltaic material, and Alistair Ward: Optimisation of anaerobic digestion for biogas production. Modification of carbomethyl cellulose by gamma radiation was presented by Syed Gulrez, while Dr Jesus Cirre discussed solution properties and emulsification properties of gum.

A lively demonstration involving ping pong ball shooters was given by delegate volunteers to demonstrate inkjet printing in a talk given by Yara Arjona. The winning presentation was given by Ben Robinson on molecular rectification of ultra-thin films. Robinson was awarded the Phil Adams memorial prize presented to him by Sylvia Adams, Phil’s mother, and a prize sponsored by Almetron Ltd.
Alistair Ward won the second speaker prize, sponsored by Excelsyn. A range of posters were presented at the symposium, Differential Factors in Colorectal Cancer by 
Debalina Sarkar and Discovering Structural Features of Mycolic Acids from Mycobacterium tuberculosis by Wilma Prinsloo winning best poster presentations, the prizes sponsored by CARM and Agualcell and presented by Dr Andy Wheildon, Excelsyn.
