Raising Money for Cancer Research UK
Chemists are committed to saving people from cancer through the development of new drugs and understanding the biochemical mechanisms that trigger this disease. Bangor chemistry student, Matt Love, is taking this desire to help one step further …
“On the 20th june 2007 I will be leaving the UK to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money in aid of Cancer Research UK. I have committed myself to this challenge to raise £3000 for cancer research UK. The challenge itself is not just one challenge but three, first is to raise the minimum sponsorship, secondly I have to get fit through a training programme and thirdly, do the challenge itself. The objective of the challenge is to climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, this will involve trekking through rain forest and high altitude glaciers. There will be many dangers to encounter such wild lions and cravasses near the summit, in total I will be climbing a total of 19,300 feet.
The money raised by this trek will be put towards research into finding treatments to cure cancer faster, get treatment to patients more quickly and develop accurate and sensitive tests for prevention and early detection of different types of cancer. Did you know that every year 120,000 people lose their lives in this country to cancer?
Considering that the majority of us have been affected at some point by the news that a relative or a close friend has been diagnosed with some form of cancer, there’s definitely a worthwhile end to my challenge and every little bit counts.
If you feel you can help me with my fundraising it would be greatly appreciated. I have personally contributed £650 towards travel expenses.”
Please send any donations to the above address before the 1st April 2007. Cheques should be made payable to “Cancer Research UK”.
