What is CPD?
The School of Chemistry at Bangor University caters to the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of chemists, materials scientists and other scientific or medical professionals by offering informal, flexible, accessible and value-for-money courses which you can study in and around your workplace. The courses are part-funded by the European Social Fund (Objective One) via the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO). SMEs within the Objective One area (e.g. Isle of Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy and Denbighshire) are able to register for the courses for a substantial discount.
How can CPD help your business?
Our courses can improve the functional performance and career horizons of most professional and managerial staff whether they are:
- junior / aspiring managers (e.g. technical experts)
- middle / senior managers
- building or refreshing skills
- seeking professional qualifications, e.g. RSC (CChem, MRSC, CSci etc.)
The courses also foster skills critical for business growth:
- commitment and enthusiasm
- effective communication
- logical, critical & deductive reasoning
- independent thought
- teamwork
Our courses are ideally suited to SMEs, where it is difficult to release staff for full-time study. For example, due to a demand from healthcare professionals, two evening courses based upon medical applications of virtual reality were held at the School of Chemistry during February 2008. The introduction of distance-based learning using Blackboard will also allow you to study in your own time.
Why Bangor?
The School of Chemistry is promoting professional and management skills that deliver real-world business results. The School of Chemistry is renowned for its teaching excellence, with the latest Guardian University Guide ranking Bangor the third best School of Chemistry overall in the UK. We are therefore spearheading an approach whereby our teaching excellence is used to develop and strengthen your professional skills base, simultaneously publicising our research facilities to the wider community.
The School of Chemistry is currently running standard CPD courses, with a certificate of completion for each successful applicant. We envisage the following forthcoming development of our CPD course portfolio.
- Customised courses tailored to your needs, e.g. evening courses.
- Courses forming part of certificate, diploma or degree programmes.
- Short web-based CPD courses.
