Explosions and Ice Cream mark a Welsh Periodic Table of Elements
Explosions, massive bubbles and speedily-produced ice cream will herald the launch of a Welsh language version of the Periodic Table of Elements at Bangor University’s pavilion in the Eisteddfod at 2.15 Tuesday 8 August.
Dr Robyn Wheldon-Williams and his team from the Sioe Gemeg will be performing exciting experiments including two record attempts at the fastest ice cream (to be made- not eaten!) and the largest bubble- including one containing a person!
Dr Robyn Wheldon-Williams is a Chemistry teacher at Ysgol Brynhyfryd and a graduate of Bangor’s School of Chemistry. Next year he will be spending a day a week at the University promoting Chemistry to schools in Wales, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
“Having the periodic table of elements available in Welsh is essential for science lessons. The professionally produced, colourful table will enhance science learning for Welsh speaking students,” said Dr Wheldon-Williams.
“This launch today marks the first product from a new campaign by the University’s School of Chemistry to contribute to Welsh medium chemistry teaching in schools. It also forms part of a wider campaign, in conjunction with Cardiff University and Techniquest, to raise the profile of chemistry in schools,” saidMeri Huws, Pro vice-Chancellor.
Two hundred 6th form student will be visiting the University’s School of Chemistry in September for a one day hands-on course using the latest equipment and techniques, integrated to the A level syllabus.
