MSc/Diploma Modern Chemical Laboratory Practice, Analytical Chemistry & Environmental Chemistry
We expect to have up to 24 Funded Postgraduate Places open to eligible EU residents* Academic Year 2006/2007
Diploma/MSc MCLP
This course provides recent graduates with training in current laboratory techniques particularly applicable in research. Training is by means of individual research projects chosen to give a range of hands-on experience in synthesis, manipulation, analysis, reactivity and investigation of physico-chemical properties. Instruction at the bench is supplemented by a lecture programme on a wide range of topics and instruction in the use of library facilities and databases. The award of the diploma is determined by the student's performance in examinations based on the lecture programme and on a satisfactory project report, together with an oral examination and School seminar. The MSc is awarded following the examination of a dissertation.
Diploma/MSc Analytical Chemistry
This course provides recent graduates with training in current analytical techniques and scientific skills which are of value to a wide range of sectors including chemical, pharmaceutical, optoelectronics and Environmental Management. The individual research topics may be in either applied or fundamental areas of analytical chemistry. The lectures and teaching cover a broad range of topics and transferable skills. Coursework is assessed by formal examination, and the MSc is awarded following the examination of a dissertation.
Diploma/MSc Environmental Chemistry
This course provides recent graduates with training in current analytical techniques and scientific skills applicable for environmental chemistry research. Individual research topics (which make up a considerable part of the course) are all in the area of environmental chemistry. . Previous topics have included: remediation of polluted land, development of better marine anti-fouling agents and the regeneration of slate quarries. The lectures and teaching cover a broad range of topics and transferable skills. Coursework is assessed by formal examination, and the MSc is awarded following the examination of a dissertation.
Chemistry at Bangor was judged 'excellent' by the recent HEFCW/HEFCE teaching assessment exercise and the School has excellent laboratory, library and computational facilities and has a research rating of 3a. The University is located in one of the most beautiful areas in Britain, situated only two miles from the Snowdonia National Park, and virtually on the shores of the Menai Straits.
*Entry is normally restricted to EU graduates in chemistry with a first or second class honours degrees and an address within an Objective One area of Wales. Applications from candidates with third class degrees may also be considered.
