Chemistry Pharmaceutical June 14, 2012
This event is now fully booked
Approximately 35,000 metric tonnes of Aspirin are produced and consumed annually, enough to make over 100 billion standard aspirin tablets every year. Nowadays aspirin is not only used as a pain killer but has also been proposed as effective in reducing the incidence of heart disease. This practical workshop will:
- Introduce Year 12 students to the synthesis of one of the oldest medicines, aspirin.
- Analyse the purity of the aspirin using specialist techniques not used in school. This year’s event includes a Spectroscopy session. Here students will be introduced to MS, IR and NMR spectroscopy, preparing them for the Organic A level module in Year 13.
Spectroscopy in a Suitcase
Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) is a new initiative at the School of Chemistry in collaboration with HE STEM and the RSC. The project brings spectroscopy to schools and colleges. UV/Visible and FTIR Spectrometers are now available with trained chemistry postgraduate students
and tested activities to allow students to get hands on experience of these techniques in their own classrooms. Funding has been allocated for 15 schools on a first come first served basis. Please indicate class size when contacting us.
Private Schools Visits
We will happily host small bespoke visits for your school to view and understand more about our lab equipment and the latest analytical technology.
