125th Anniversary Studentships

To celebrate our 125th anniversary, Bangor University is launching a five year programme of postgraduate expansion. This starts in 2009-10 when we will invest around £5M in up to 125 research studentships and bursaries, with further expansion and more opportunities to apply for in the future.  This first round of new awards are all studentships and bursaries for 3 year PhD study.

The following College members are currently accepting applications from potential PhD students. There are 8 fully funded studentships and 7 bursaries.We welcome applications from Home/EU and International students.

Each holder of a PhD studentship receives an annual maintenance grant of £12,500 (for 2009/10) and an annual research allowance of up to  £1,500 (for approved expenditure) with the core grant rising by £500 p.a. Studentship holders do not pay fees. No additional allowances are payable. Successful studentship applicants will be expected to supply around 100 hours per year of teaching/Research Assistance work as part of their development as an academic of the future.

Each PhD bursary provides an annual allowance of £5,000 and an annual research allowance of up to £1,500 (for approved expenditure). Fees are payable. Applicants are not expected to teach or act as Research Assistants, but may apply to do so if vacancies occur.

To apply please send in the following:

  • Covering letter
  • CV
  • Name of the supervisor you would like to work with
  • Statement (100 - 500 words) on your relevant research skills (listing all your relevant skills, such as computer skills, relevant prior experience, the title and a brief description of your undergraduate study)
  • Statement (250 - 1000 words) of your main research focus of research interest, potentially describing some research you have done in the past.  Indicate clearly how you think this research interest would fit with the potential supervisor you have identified and with the research environment in CoHaBS, Bangor.
  • Two letters of reference on your suitability to undertake a PhD programme.
  • A copy of an official transcript of your academic results for first degrees and masters where applicable.
  • You should state the nature and extent of your linguistic abilities and qualifications if your first language is not English or Welsh.
  • Please note - all applicants should complete the university monitoring form, which is downloadable here. Please return this with your application.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 19 June 2009.  Please send you applications in electronically to COHABS125@bangor.ac.uk.   The College hopes to inform successful applicants by mid July 2009.
