125th Anniversary PhD Research Studentship in Medical Sciences

Cardiac rehabilitation for the treatment of the Cardiac Syndrome X.

The School of Medical Sciences invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to work with Professor Michael Rees and Dr Julian Breeze in a collaborative project with Dr Jonathan Moore from the School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences. The research will focus on the investigation of Cardiovascular Syndrome X (CSX), which affects 20-30% of patients admitted to hospitals with angina-like pain. The studentship has two primary aims: (1) to undertake a case-control association study in CSX for various markers of cardiovascular function, systemic inflammation and stress; and, (2) to undertake randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of treatments available, such as cardiac rehabilitation (CR) physical training, educational programmes, drug treatments, and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Situated in an idyllic setting on the Menai Straits, close to Snowdonia National Park, Bangor University has excellent facilities for medical imaging and clinical exercise physiology.  The University is committed to the all-round academic and professional development of its research students.

The studentship will cover registration fees plus a maintenance grant of £12500 pa. Successful applicants will normally have a first or upper second class honours degree or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, the ability to work independently with support from a supervisor, and the enthusiasm to contribute to stimulating research and practice environments.

The deadline for applications is 19th June 2009.
