Enhancing the motor skills of individuals with a learning disability.

Applications are invited for a three year full time PhD Studentship.  The aim of the research is to investigate how skill acquisition techniques factors should be adapted and applied to aid people with a learning disability.  The research will help review current systems in Wales designed to help those with learning disabilities improve their motor skills.  This research will have implications both towards enhancing skills training techniques for this population and in educating those who deliver such training protocols.  The successful candidate will be supervised academically by Dr. Gavin Lawrence and Prof.  Michael Khan.  In addition, the student will also work alongside Wayne Crocker, assistant director of Royal Mencap Society (Mencap Cymru).   The studentship is placed within the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences with the student registered in the School of Sport, Health, and Exercise Sciences.  The School has excellent facilities supporting high quality research and is situated in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Menai Straits close to the mountains of Snowdonia. 

The school is recognised as one of the very best in the UK for its research, teaching and student support.  The school is very committed to the all-round academic and professional development of its research students.  The studentship covers all tuition fees, provides a stipend of £13,290 pa and an additional £1000 pa towards travel and conference costs.  This studentship is part funded by the Convergence programmes for West Wales and the Valleys European Social Fund (ESF). Successful applicants will normally have a 2:1 or 1st Class BSc Honours Degree or a Masters Degree in a relevant discipline, the ability to work independently with support from a supervisor, and the enthusiasm to contribute to stimulating research and practice environments.  Knowledge of both motor control and learning and learning disabilities would be an advantage, though it is not essential.
