A new work by Guto Puw - a lecturer in Bangor University's School of Music and recent winner of the BBC Radio 3 Listeners' Award - opens this special concert in which the BBC National Orchestra of Wales contributes to the University's anniversary celebrations. The evening is themed around the French horn: one of the orchestra's most versatile instruments. The BBC NOW's first horn player Tim Thorpe performs works by Mozart and Bangor's former Professor of Music William Mathias. Two symphonies complete the evening's programme: Haydn's Seventieth, written to mark the building of a new opera house at Eszterháza, and Beethoven's Second, which heralds that composer's inimitable mastery of the symphonic genre.

Bruckner: Te Deum

Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor

The University Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents a festive concert of works composed in the decade of Bangor University's foundation, as part of the institution's 125th anniversary celebrations. Bruckner's majestic choral Te Deum (1884) is framed by two of the best loved works in the orchestral repertoire: Tchaikovsky's rousing 1812 Overture (1882), depicting in spectacular detail the defeat of Napoleon's forces by the Russian Imperial Army, and Brahms's Fourth Symphony (1885), perhaps the finest symphonic work since Beethoven.

Free pre-concert talk (Main Arts Lecture Theatre, 6.30pm): Bangor University's Registrar, Dr David Roberts, outlines the University's 125-year role in the cultural life of the city. Copies of Dr Roberts's new book on the history of the University will be available at the interval.

Rachel Hair & Delyth Jenkins.

Date: Thursday 3 December 2009
Time: 20:00:00

An evening of traditional and contemporary harp music from Wales and Scotland.

Starting her musical career with the Swansea-based band Cromlech, Delyth Jenkins later combined with two of the members to form the highly acclaimed instrumental trio "Aberjaber". Alongside this, she developed her own successful solo career, performing across Europe and the States, as well as closer to home. To date she has two solo albums and a third in the pipeline, combining her love of traditional music and her own contemporary compositions.

Hailing from the Scottish Highland village of Ullapool, Rachel Hair's eclectic mix of Scottish, Irish and original music, highly influenced from both her time studying alongside jazz, folk, rock and classical musicians and her mixed Scots and Irish parentage, has led her to be described as 'one of the most innovative young musicians to have emerged over the last few years' (The Irish Music Review).
