Dr. Eben J. Muse's research interests lie in the relationship between technology and discourse. His early work explored the way that film and film technology was used to re-imagine past events to fit into current ideology and culture. His book The Land of Nam: The Vietnam War and American Film explored this discourse in the context of America's coming to terms with that War during the Regan and Bush years. He has also studied this relationship through the discourse of teaching and learning (within both individual and organisational contexts). Working for eight years in the Centre for Learning Development and then the Research Institute for Enhancing Learning at Bangor University, he developed a variety of learning technologies including the Edisus system, the GO Wales Reflective Diary and the NeGES e-guidance system, as well asĀ  a range of multimedia learningĀ  materials.

Dr Muse continues to teach and research on technology and learning, however he has recently begun exploring the way new, and particularly digital, media facilitates a form of self- or communal-expression that is not bounded by words or limited by the vocabulary of any one language. His current research explores a variety of media (video, animation, collaborative, MUVEs, games) for creating digital stories and other discourses, and studies these new media in the light of a media history that includes oral and traditional composition and delivery, silent cinema, and the history of the bound volume.
