Trans(formation) Events

A series of Research Events at the School of Creative Studies & Media, Bangor University

Mission Statement

Our School is diverse. We engage with media, film, performance, visual culture, journalism, gaming and creative writing. Yet we are connected by the idea of transformations – trans(formations) - in media and cultural forms, practices and discourses in the trans-digital age.

Some of us examine digital transformations in (and convergences between) ‘media’ in relation, for example, to experimental forms of media and creative practices. These are often rapid and cutting-edge, not least when concerned with the blurring of boundaries between film, games, literature, documentary journalism, and so on. We explore new relationships between: the real and virtual; the individual and mediated social, political and economic structures; and new media and old media – genres, creative practices, audiences/users and power (political, ideological, and economic).

Some of us dissect slower-paced but profound transformations in the pre- and trans-digital age through historical, critical and visual analysis of specific social issues and media-culture practices. We identify discursive shifts and hegemonic struggles across film, visual culture and journalism, in areas such as Cold War, hot wars, War on Terror, nation-building and more globalised and diasporic identities.

Some of us seek transformations in our media and cultural practice. We explore new ways of writing, performing and audio-visual production, experimenting with the creative potential of new cultural and media forms across: adaptation, film, documentary, site-specific performance, vertical dance, art games and prose.
