English with English Language (Q310)

This degree programme offers you the opportunity to study a range of courses in English Literature and at the same time to study the history and structure of the English Language with specialist tutors in Linguistics. It will develop linguistic awareness and the intellectual and interpersonal skills which are valued by a wide range of employers. Two thirds of your courses will be chosen from those in English Literature.

First Year / Part One

In your first year, you must take a total of 120 credits, 80 credits of English and 40 credits of English Language, including the compulsory English modules: QXE1002 Textual Analysis and QXE1000 Critical Interpretations; Language modules (see below) and other modules worth 40 credits (20 credits of which could be taken in Film, Creative Writing or American Literature and Culture, which are also taught by staff in the department). Or, if you wish, you could sample courses, worth up to 40 credits, from other academic subjects e.g. History, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Psychology, Information Technology. Semester One

Semester Two:

Second and Third Years / Part Two

In your second year you must take a total of 120 credits, 80 credits of English and 40 credits of English Language (see below). It is impossible for a 'with English Language' student to take an 'elective' in another subject including those also taught within the English department, Creative Writing, Film and American Literature and Culture.

English Literature with English Language students currently choose 40 credits from the following:

Compulsory:
Either QXL2210 Meaning: Semantics & Pragmatics
Or QXL2212 English Sentence Structure
A total of 40 credits in Level 2 Linguistics (see list below) +80 credits in English Literature

Optional Additional choices (CHOOSE ONE):

QXL2214 Sentence Structure: Syntax
QXL2215 Variation in English
QXL2219 Sounds & Sound Structure
QXL2217 Child Language Acquisition

For the remaining 80 credits, Students must choose a minimum of 20 credits from each of the sets A and B:

•    B QXE2004 Romanticism

Third Year

In the third year you must take a total of 120 credits, 80 credits of English and 40 credits of English Language (see below). You may take a dissertation in English Literature (QXE3099). To find out more about modules offered in the English Department in the third year, click here.
