English with Theatre Studies (Q3WK)

This degree programme enables you to study theatre and explore the use of text in performance alongside a core of courses in English literature, which will itself contain aspects of drama, considered from more literary aspects. The course will examine all practical aspects of theatre and the role of actors, directors, designers, lighting designers and stage managers.

Two thirds of your courses will be chosen from those in English literature (see BA in English Literature). You take two modules in theatre studies each year. Guest speakers and professional workshops will be included in the programme and use will be made of fully equipped studios within the University and of Theatre Gwynedd, the 350 seat theatre owned by the University.

First Year / Part One

In your first year, you must take a total of 120 credits, 40 credits of Film, 40 credits of English (the compulsory English modules: QXE1002 Textual Analysis and QXE1000 Critical Interpretations) the compulsory and other modules worth 40 credits (which could be taken in English, Creative Writing or American Literature and Culture, all of which are taught by staff in the English department). Introduction to Theatre Studies
Practical workshop sessions on aspects of staging together with an academic analysis of stage plays.

Theatre Classics
A workshop-based course giving you a grounding in major concepts of world theatre, e.g. Greek tragedy and Aristotelian ideas, Chekhov and Stanislavskian acting techniques.

Second and Third Years / Part Two

Second and Third year Part Two modules for ‘with Theatre Studies’ students:

You develop skills in all aspects of theatrical production and analysis. You may choose to specialise in a particular role such as actor, director, stage manager etc. You choose courses from:

English Stages
Workshop-based study of English drama in various periods, considering period and staging, e.g. Restoration comedy, Victorian melodrama.

Twentieth Century Theatre
Workshop-based study of variety of styles, e.g. tragedy, expressionist and absurdist theatre, considering issues of staging and design.

Theatre in Society
The development of political theatre, the theory of theatre-in-education, growth of community theatre and site-specific theatre.

Directing Theatre
A study of influential directors and their styles, including Stanislavski, Brecht, Artaud and Brook.
