How to Apply

Image of prospective student filling in an application form

If you have not already done so, you should consult the University's information pages for prospective postgraduates. In particular, there are details of fees, and a downloadable application form.

Applicants for higher degrees by research (MPhil/PhD), both in criticism and in creative and critical writing, should include a detailed research proposal on a separate sheet.

Please note that because of the open, research-oriented nature of the MA English, it will help your chances of acceptance, and will make the MA programme more rewarding, if you use the "Personal Statement" section of the form to outline your plans for study; as a minimum, please indicate which periods and/or authors interest you. If you would like further advice or guidance, please consult the senior postgraduate tutor before applying .

Deadlines

For entry in late September 2011, the school would ideally like to receive MPhil/PhD applications by the end of June, and MA applications by the end of July. Please note that you will need to obtain your reference before sending the application to us. We may be able to accommodate applications after this date, but you should check with us before applying.

Prospective students intending to apply for AHRC funding will be aware of the AHRC's deadline at the start of May, and of the importance of working with the prospective supervisor to produce the strongest possible application. To allow time for this, the deadline for students intending to apply for AHRC funding for courses commencing late September 2011 is late February 2011 ; we encourage applicants to make informal contact at the earliest possible opportunity.
