Environmental Management at Bangor University

Welcome

Snow capped mountains, golden beaches, a National Park, pristine lakes rivers and coastal waters -there are not many Universities that can boast these assets on their doorstep! Whether you’re a student, a member of staff, or a visitor, you can’t fail to be impressed by what our surroundings have to offer.  We take immense pride in the quality of our environment at Bangor University, and we are committed to its protection and enhancement. That means thinking about the impacts of everything we do, and whether, from an environmental perspective, it can be done better.

With an estate of 210 buildings across 346 hectares, as well as a complement of over 10,000 students and 2000 staff, we recognise the implications of our impact on the environment.

The Sustainability Management Board is tasked with overseeing the evolution and implementation of a Sustainability Agenda for Bangor University, and reporting to the Executive Committee.  Specific Actions are achieved through the multifunctional Sustainability Implementation Group, supported with input from Sustainability Forum, which includes representation from the wider University population as well as the local community.

We have developed a formal Environmental Management System (EMS) to support our commitment to achieving continual environmental improvement. The EMS is certified to the prestigious “Green Dragon Environmental Standard” and the guide to this can be viewed in our Environmental Management Manual.  Further information relating to our EMS can  be accessed in these pages.

Do your bit for Bangor, for Gwynedd and for Wales...

Here at Bangor we’ve just launched our Environmental Pledge, that we want everyone to sign up to. It’s not rocket science- just a few simple actions that you can take to make a big difference to our environmental performance (you’re probably doing them already – but we’d still like you to sign up to show your commitment!)

Take a look at the Pledge here

If you would like to sign up, just drop an e-mail to the University’s Environmental Manager, Ricky Carter, (environment@bangor.ac.uk) indicating if you are a student or member of staff. You will then be added to the mailing list to receive updates on how we’re doing on the environmental front, and, if you’re really keen and willing, may get the opportunity to help out with spreading the word through events, campaigns etc.
