The School of Healthcare Sciences was founded at Bangor University and Archimedes Centre during the 1990’s following the integration of the NHS education services for Health Care Professions, which had previously been part of the former Gwynedd and Clwyd Health Authorities for over thirty years. Although now fully integrated into the higher education sector rather than the health service, the School has maintained close links with North Wales NHS Trusts including the Maelor hospital (please see below) and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, both of which provide practice placements for the undergraduate nursing students during their three year studies and whose staff make up the major part of the post registration student body.
The Wrexham Maelor Hospital, has very close links with the School of Healthcare Sciences and is conveniently situated close to the School. The Maelor is the largest single site hospital in North Wales and has recently undergone an extensive multi-million pound programme of modernisation and growing academic status in conjunction with the University Of Wales College Of Medicine
