.
We are hoping that the course will run on an ad hoc basis commencing at the same time as the long course, practice placements are offered in a variety of areas across the Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board (BCUHB).

At this time we are unable to confirm a date for commencement of the course however it will not be commencing this year (2012)

Please check this webpage regularly for further information.

When we are able to confirm course commencement we will offer an open day specifically for the short course – that information will be available on this site.

Course Structure

When the course runs it will be alongside, sharing learning with, the current long course.

How will I learn?

There will be a combination of theory, simulation and practice placement based learning opportunities, with all summative assessments being compulsory. The course is full time and students are  expected to follow the duty rota of the mentor whilst on practice placement. Study will involve substantial self directed study based on enquiry based learning.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and will include assignments, presentations, examination, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE ) and portfolio development with an emphasis on the development of professional attitude, behaviour, practical skills and competence.

There will be opportunity to gain practice experience in maternity units offering care to pregnant women and their families with a variety of placements during the course in various settings within the BCUHB area. Placements are organised as close as possible the students’ home address, however some travel to placements will be necessary which will be self funded.

Practice experience begins by observing professionals at work and in order to develop necessary  skills and competence students are  expected to participate, under supervision, in the delivery of midwifery care from very early on in the course. This will involve working with midwifery teams in the hospital and community to provide continuity of care, following the same shift patterns as midwife mentors including working weekends and night duty.

The course involves a variety of course work assignments, this is supported by a personal tutor, who is also a registered midwife, and mentor  supervision whilst on placements from practising midwives. There will also be access to a Supervisor of Midwives for professional advice and support.
