POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMME IN HEALTHCARE

The School of Healthcare Sciences provides a comprehensive range of opportunities for students to develop research skills and expertise within a creative and supportive academic community. These opportunities include:

Masters by Research

This programme provides students with a mix of taught modules to develop an in-depth knowledge of research methods and skills within a health context. A dissertation enables students to demonstrate mastery in selected aspects of the research process.

MPhil / PhD

Research degrees provide students with a unique opportunity to develop an independent programme of research that will contribute to knowledge in their professional field, and provide unique opportunities for personal and career development.

Professional Doctorate in Healthcare

Higher-level healthcare practice combines theory and evidence from research with other forms of knowledge, including aesthetics, ethics and personal professional knowledge, that is located within varied organisational and political contexts. Whilst research degrees provide students with the opportunity to focus on research, the Professional Doctorate provides students with a structured programme to advance scholarship within their professional practice. This programme is especially relevant for those health professionals in advanced clinical or organisational roles which combine elements of practice, research and service improvement in healthcare.

Our research students

Our research students come from a wide range of professional, disciplinary and specialist backgrounds - nursing, midwifery, radiography, occupational therapy, psychology, speech therapy, dietary/nutritionist services, health services management and so on. Most, but not all will have completed a taught postgraduate degree.

Funding

Some of our research students self-fund their studies, or have the financial support of their employer or educational sponsor.

Where appropriate, applicants are encouraged to work with School research staff and apply to PhD studentship and fellowship competitions.

We are also keen to enable students to complete PhDs as part of currently funded research projects. Please keep an eye on our website for these opportunities.
