Anne Williams

Anne, an experienced researcher in the field of health service delivery and organization is based at Cardiff. Anne’s research has for many years focused on how doctors and nurses work together to deliver patient-centred services in primary and community health care. What counts as patient-centred services has interested her for some time, and her current research pursues this interest, particularly in relation to services for children, young people, their families and carers.

After qualifying in nursing at Guy’s Hospital and midwifery at the General Lying-In Hospital, London, Anne held clinical appointments in the UK and Canada. In 1977 she took a BA degree in social anthropology at the University of British Columbia, Canada, obtaining a Masters degree three years later. She returned to the UK and studied in the Department of Sociology at the University of Manchester, gaining a PhD in 1989.

Before moving to Cardiff in 2005, Anne held a Lectureship and Senior Lectureship at Manchester University (1990-97). She provided research leadership as Professor of Nursing in Swansea University (1997-2005) and in her capacity as elected member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Research Society Steering Committee (1998-2002), including Chair of the International Annual Conference Scientific Committee.

Anne is currently a member of the Higher Education Funding Council Research Assessment Exercise 2008, Sub Panel 11 (Nursing and Midwifery). She also sits on the Patient and Carer Centred Services Commissioning Group of the National Co-ordinating Centre for NHS Delivery and Organisation R&D Programme and also serves on the research committee for `Breast Cancer Care’, London, UK.

Anne lives with her husband Bernard in Pembrokeshire where they share their home with two dogs, three cats, a colony of bats and from time to time barn owls, buzzards and wild ducklings. Family and friends join them during the holidays. Spending time with family and friends is very important to Anne. As well as family picnics favourite pastimes include walking in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside and along the coastal paths. Anne goes to the opera whenever there is an opportunity. Music has always featured in her life in one way or another and one of her ambitions for the future is to take up her violin and start playing again!
