This was our first submission to the RAE, made in conjunction with the Institute for Medical and Social Care Research (IMSCaR) as part of our continuing and rapidly expanding research trajectory. The RAE results show that our publications are internationally competitive in most areas, with sombeing world-leading and others of clear value within the UK context. We are also delighted that postgraduate expansion plans have been developing rapidly. The School is part of a major programme of health-related research at Bangor, which spreads over several Colleges and offers the opportunity for students to study with internationally recognised academics.

Research within the School of Healthcare Sciences at Bangor University is based within the Centre for Health-Related Research (CHeRR). Established in 2006, the Centre is committed to the conduct of well-founded, scientific research in health and social care. CHeRR focuses on national and international, multi-professional research in two areas:

  1. Policy-driven research into assessment and care management; carers; and language and cultural awareness, and
  2. Patient-centred health services research into clinical practice, knowledge transfer and utilisation; patient, child and family perspectives; and service delivery and organisation.

Our research is organised into three themes, under the umbrella of the Delivery of Care by Health and Social Care Practitioners research group within the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences, and which provides the basis for collaborative research activity between staff within CHeRR and IMSCaR. These themes are:

  • Language and cultural awareness in health and social care
  • Knowledge translation and utilisation, and
  • Long term conditions across the lifespan.

These themes are underpinned by two complementary methodological approaches - trials and economic evaluation, and qualitative and patient-centred designs.
