The following outlines the School's formal Committee structure.

All of the Committees referred to here are formally minuted, and the approved minutes subsequently published on the N drive for all staff to view.

NB. Appropriate Radiography representatives need to be incorporated into the Senior Teams, Board of Studies and Sub-Boards.

Senior Strategic Teams

1.Senior Academic Team

a. Functions

The functions of the Senior Academic Team (SAT) are:

  • To discuss and agree short-, medium- and long-term strategic academic plans for the School that correspond with its philosophy of encouraging and developing multi-disciplinary research and education provision and accord with overall Bangor University operational plans.
  • To discuss School-wide issues relating to teaching and research provision, and their implications.
  • To discuss and agree any matters not appropriate for consideration at any other formal SHS forum. Identify financial and resource implications of any decisions, and subsequently make recommendations to the Senior Finance Team.

2.Senior Finance Team

a. Functions

The functions of the Senior Finance Team are:

  • To agree and monitor budgets for the financial year and regularly review these.
  • To review the School’s contracts with other organisations.
  • To plan the efficient and effective use of services and resources.
  • To predict medium and long-term needs to help manage and plan the School’s business.

3.Senior Support Services Team

a. Functions

The functions of the Senior Support Services Team are:

  • To agree short-, medium- and long-term plans for administrative/support services within the School.
  • To review and monitor efficient and effective provision of administrative/support services.
  • To agree actions to improve the quality of administrative/support services.
  • To identify financial and resource implications of any decisions, and to subsequently make recommendations to the Senior Finance Team.

School Board of Studies & Sub-Boards

1.Board of Studies (BoS)

a. Functions

The functions of the Board of Studies (BoS) are:

  • To determine the policy of the School with regard to:
    • Criteria for admission
    • Course syllabi and curricula
    • Methods of teaching & assessment
    • Research activity
    • Quality assurance systems
  • To consider the progress of students, their assessment and the result of examinations.
  • To consider academic matters of concern.
  • To advise on the appointment of the Head of School and academic staff as required.
  • To advise on the area of expertise required of any new appointment in the School.
  • To suggest names of persons suitable for appointment as external examiners.
  • To recommend persons for honorary appointments in the School.
  • To consider any matters referred to it by the Senate.
  • To make recommendations to other Boards of Studies/Heads of School on academic matters.

2.Teaching & Learning Committee (TLC)

a. Functions

The functions of the Teaching & Learning Committee are:

  • To take the lead within the School on all quality issues affecting teaching and learning.
  • To be the recognised internal curriculum validating body for all new courses, modules and programmes of study to be offered by the SHS.
  • To be the recognised internal curriculum validating body for proposed curriculum changes to existing courses, modules and programmes of study offered by the SHS, where the proposed change represents a 25% or more difference in relation to indicative content, learning outcomes or assessment strategy.
  • To receive, for information, details of any changes to existing course, module or programme curricula representing less than a 25% difference to indicative content, learning outcomes or assessment strategy and any other minor alterations [e.g. amendment to module title].
  • To undertake internal curriculum validation in accordance with the Bangor University Code of Practice for Programme Approval, Monitoring and Review.
  • To consider at agreed regular intervals a summary of external examiners’ reports, and take any necessary action.
  • To consider at agreed regular intervals a summary of students’/service colleagues’ evaluations of each programme offered, and take any necessary action.
  • To consider at agreed regular intervals feedback from clinical placement areas, and take any necessary action.
  • To consider for initial approval all external examiner nominations before making recommendations to Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW)and/or Bangor University as appropriate.
  • To consider any other issues that arise concerning the quality of teaching and learning within SHS.
  • To report regularly on the work/decisions of the TLC to the SHS Board of Studies.

3. Student Assessment & Practice Education Sub-Board

a. Functions

The functions of the SAPED are:

  • To establish and maintain standards of student academic and practice performance.
  • To establish detailed criteria for the specification of satisfactory standards of achievement.
  • To establish detailed criteria for the specification of satisfactory standards of achievement.
  • To make nominations for the appointment of External Examiners.
  • To commission and give Terms of Reference to Working Groups set up to address assessment and practice education issues, as appropriate.
  • To ensure practice placements meet the requirements of the School of Healthcare Sciences / H.P.W. / N.M.C., and recommend appropriate action if Clinical Placements do not meet these standards.
  • To receive, monitor and review evaluative feedback appertaining to assessment and practice placements, developing and amending policies and procedures accordingly to ensure quality is maintained.
  • To Co-ordinate the development of new Practice Placements.
  • To maintain registers of all Mentors and link Tutors.
  • To monitor the needs and preparation of new Mentors and Assessors for all Practice Placements.
  • To develop a monitoring system to ensure that requirements set in the local agreements for Practice Placements are met.
  • To evaluate the Practice Placement education audit tool.
  • To convene up-date meetings for Mentors and Assessors.
  • To report regularly on the work/decisions of the Sub-Board to the SHS Board of Studies.

  • Director of Bachelor of Nursing Undergraduate Courses (Wrexham) / Deputy Head of School with responsibility for Examination and Assessments (Chair)
  • Lecturer representation from all courses offered within the school.
  • Clinical representation from each NHS Trust in North Wales.
  • Student representation.

All lecturers can nominate themselves for membership of the Sub Board and others, may, as appropriate to ensure representation from all courses, be nominated through the Board of Studies.

5.Welsh Medium Developments Sub-board

a. Functions

The functions of the Welsh Medium Developments Sub-Board are:

  • To inform the Board of Studies of issues relating to the bilingual policy of Bangor University and its implementation.
  • To inform the Board of Studies of the implications of the Welsh Language schemes of the local NHS Trusts on curriculum development within the School.
  • To enhance and develop language-sensitive teaching and learning strategies that meet and respond to identified local and national health care needs.
  • To advise the Board of Studies on the recruitment and development strategies for staff within the School, ensuring that the bilingual needs of the organization are met.
  • To advise the Board of Studies on the recruitment strategies that ensure the identified needs for bilingual students are met.
