Strategic Equality Plan

A chance to have your say

The University is in the process of developing a Strategic Equality Plan as part of the new equality duties that came into place in Wales in April 2011.

For more information on the duties please click on the links below:

Why do we want your opinions?

To develop a strategic equality plan the University wishes to engage staff and students through consultation to identify what are the priorities across all equality areas. A questionnaire will be sent to all staff and students but if you have ideas, comments or wish to contribute in another way please contact by email - equality@bangor.ac.uk and by internal post: Equality @ Human Resources, Human Resources, Bryn Afon, College Road, Bangor.

All correspondence will be treated as confidential and you will only be contacted if you specifically indicate your willingness to take part.  Please help us to create a truly meaningful Strategic Equality Plan.

Two engagement sessions will also be held to enable staff and students to discuss equality issues and begin to develop the key aims of the strategy.  These events will be held on:

Tuesday, 31 January (1.00pm – 4.00pm) in Hen Goleg Conference Room, Bangor Business School

Tuesday, 7 February (9.30am – 12.00pm) in Council Chamber, Main Arts Building

If you are interested in attending one of these events please contact hyfforddi@bangor.ac.uk

Developments in Equality Training

There is a requirement for all staff to attend relevant equality training and at the University we offer a number of training options in this area that include:

Equality E-learning Package
The online e-learning package is available for all staff and covers all areas of equality legislation, University policy and best practice. This is a self-study module that can be completed at the learners own pace to fit in with work demands.  All new staff are registered on the package as part of their Induction and a programme of registering staff in all Colleges and Central Departments is also underway.

Equality Training for Managers
This is a mandatory course for all staff who manage others.  The workshop encourages managers to consider the practical application of the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy within Colleges and Departments and ensures that managers not only understand their roles and responsibilities within the context of equality legislation but also how to promote equality and diversity in the workplace.

Courses are held annually and staff are invited to attend by the Vice Chancellor and all managers are asked to attend.  In addition, an Employment Law Update is arranged annually as part of the managers’ Maps and Compasses Programme.

Customised Equality and Diversity Training for Colleges and Departments
The Staff Development Team offer customised workshops for teams within the Colleges and Departments on all the equality strands.   Although all workshops will cover some generic equality issues there is an opportunity to tailor the training to suit the particular situation of a team and link it to other areas of activity  e.g. exploring customer service, working with international students and working effectively in diverse teams.

Recruitment and Selection

The skills in managing an effective recruitment and selection process to ensure a fair and transparent experience for those who are involved in the recruitment process is important to the University.  Therefore, a new Recruitment and Selection course will be launched in 2012 which will cover all legal and procedural aspects of the recruitment process and recruitment interviewing.  This is to support the University’s new policy in which it will be mandatory for at least one member of an interview panel to have attended this course by the 1 September 2012 and all members of a panel must be trained by September 2013.
