Noted below is the University's Training and Development Policy as well as its guidlines regarding essential training. The Training and Development Policy outlines the University's approach and processes regarding training. The esssential training section notes the Univesity's requirement for staff and specific staff groups to undertake essential training for reasons of legal compliance, to meet professional body requirements and to meet quality standards or policy e.g. health and safety and the requirement to acquire an initial teacher training qualification in line with the UK Professional Standards for Teaching and the Support of Learning in Higher Education.
For new staff, relevant training should be identified within the first week (where possible) and it is the responsibility of the manager to ensure that the necessary training is identified. For current staff, essential training requirements should be highlighted in the Performance Development Review and the Reviewer or Reviewee should seek opportunities during the year to address those training needs. The list noted below will be reviewed annually to ensure that it reflects current legislative requirements and best supports staff in their roles.

Process
The Application Form should be completed by the member of staff making the application for support and then sent to Head of School / Department / College for approval. Following approval, the costs of the course will be fully or part covered by the relevant School / Department, or forwarded to HR to apply for full or part support from the central HR budget. In both cases the relevant form should be copied and sent to the Staff Development Team. If an application for support to follow a professional qualification is approved a contract must be signed by the Head of School / Department and the relevant member of staff.
