Fire Safety at the University

The importance of establishing a Fire Safety standard cannot be emphasised enough as exposure to fire and smoke is one of the most frightening scenarios a person can find themselves in.

Avoiding fire in the first place (prevention), reducing the impact of fire (mitigation) and knowing what to do in the event of a fire (emergency procedures) are critical to personal safety and to business continuity.

The Fire Safety at the University Standard and Information Sheets sets criterion which the University expects all individuals and each College, School and Department to follow.

Your support is paramount to managing fire safety risk at the University.

This section provides detail in the form of 'Information Sheets' on subjects and areas such as:

  • Managerial responsibility;
  • How to undertake a fire drill and who performs these;
  • The testing and servicing of fire alarm and emergency lighting systems;
  • Emergency procedures and what to do in a fire;
  • Training and provision of information;
  • Personal emergency egress plans; and more.
