CEPhI - Centre for Economics and Policy in Health

Welcome

Welcome to the Centre for Economics and Policy in Health.  Founded in 2001, we are one of three health economics centres in Wales.

The Centre is part of the multi-disciplinary Institute of Medical and Social Care Research (IMSCaR), within the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences (CoHaBS) at Bangor University.

Research Themes

The Centre is active across a range of health economic research activities.  These are broadly categorised into the following:

Economic evaluation alongside clinical trials

Examples include an RCT of primary care based osteopathy for the management of back pain; an RCT of a parenting programme for families with children at risk of developing conduct disorder; and an RCT of folic acid supplementation for the treatment of depression.

Pharmacoeconomics

Projects include the assessment of the pharmacological, clinical and health economic impact of non-compliance with pharmaceuticals; the assessment of the cost-effectiveness of pharmaceuticals and of pharmacogenetic testing.

Service evaluation

Examples of recent work include the evaluation of the All Wales Cancer Genetics Service; telemedicine infrastructure in North Wales; and performance indicators for the NHS in Wales.

University third mission activities

In line with Bangor University’s third mission goals to support the local community, the centre has built excellent multidisciplinary links tackling locally relevant rural issues such as farmer health; translation and validation of the Welsh EQ-5D.

The Centre for Economics and Policy in Health is funded half from recurrent resources from the Welsh assembly Government (through the National Public Health Service for Wales, WORD and the Welsh Medicines Partnership), and half through research contracts.

It has established links with:

  • National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) – providing health economics support to quality improvement led by the Wales Centre for Health e.g. development of performance indicators for the NHS in Wales.
  • North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health and Social Care (NWORTH) – providing health economics support alongside pragmatic randomised controlled trials.
  • CRC Cymru, through the Welsh Health Economics Support Service (WHESS) – ensuring an integrated approach to health economics research and development in Wales.
  • Welsh Medicines Partnership (WMP) – providing pharmacoeconomic assessment of evidence submitted by the pharmaceutical industry to the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group.
  • Welsh Assembly Government – (Institute of Welsh Affairs).
  • National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) – providing health economics support to NICE committees and projects.
