Other Sources of Funding

There are many government and non-government organisations that provide scholarship schemes enabling international students to source funding to study at a UK university. Students should contact the Ministry of Education or Education Department in their country, as they should have details of scholarship opportunities for students wishing to study overseas. They will also be able to advise the government's conditions for studying abroad. Students should also contact the British Council office in the country of origin, which should have details of British scholarship schemes. If there is no British Council office in the country, then the nearest British Embassy or High Commission should be contacted.

British Chevening Scholarships - Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

The aim of British Chevening scholarships is to bring to the UK present and future leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers, including particularly able students from countries with whom the UK 's economic relations are expected to develop. Preference is given to candidates already established in a career. Awards are given annually to students from a wide variety of countries and can cover all or part of the cost.

Selection of candidates is carried out overseas by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council director. Students should therefore, be resident in their home country when they apply.

Some British Chevening awards are jointly funded with private companies, universities, trusts, foundations and other grant-making organisations. These are usually advertised locally in those countries where the awards are offered. Students should not write to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London as they cannot allocate individual scholarships. US citizens are not eligible for this scholarship - please refer to British Marshall Scholarships.

For further details, contact the British Embassy, British High Commission or British Council office in the home country.
