Bangor University celebrates Chinese New Year

Bangor University welcomed in the Chinese New Year with a party which celebrated the year of the golden dragon. Staff joined with the Chinese student society and other students and their families to celebrate the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. Students helped put together the event, which began with welcoming speeches from Professor David Shepard, (Deputy Vice Chancellor), Professor Philip Molyneux (Head of the College or Business, Social Sciences and Law) and Oscar Wu (President of the Chinese Student Society). Bangor University delegation visits Central South University of Forestry & Technology
On the 21st November 2011, the Vice-Chancellor led a delegation from Bangor University on a visit to the Central South University of Forestry and Technology (CSUFT) in China. A friendship tree was planted on the campus with Professor Xianyan Zhou, Vice-Chancellor of CSUT.
The delegation from Bangor included Dr Xinyu Wu, the Director of the International Education Centre, Luna Wu, the Director of Bangor China Office, Professor Dermot Cahill, the Head of Bangor University Law School and Dr Wei Shi, Lecturer in Law.

Alumni invited to a special reception
Bangor University were delighted to invite alumni based in North China to a special reception in Beijing on the 29th October 2011, hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hughes. It was a great opportunity for alumni to meet up and hear the latest news from the Vice Chancellor's delegation including Professor Phil Molyneux, the Head of the College of Business, Social Sciences and Law, Dr Aled Griffiths, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Bangor Law School, Dr Wei Shi, Lecturer in Law.
Developing relationship with China University of Political Science & Law
On the 27th October 2011, Bangor University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hughes met with Professor Jin Huang, the Vice Chancellor of China University of Political Science and Law. The meeting was held to discuss how the two universities could further collaborate.
The Welsh Government hosted a reception in Bejing. Bangor University invited other partners to the reception which included Beihang University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Union University and China South University of Forestry and Technology. Representatives were greeted by Carwyn Jones, the First Minister of Wales.

New film uncovers what Wales has to offer international students
A new film that puts Welsh universities in the spotlight and features one of Bangor University's students, Chie Takahashi from Japan, is now available to watch on the web.
'Why Wales' follows Liana Stewart as she journeys through Wales to discover why over 13,000 students from outside Europe have chosen to study in Wales, UK, this year.
The journey takes her to universities across the country and
along the way she sees some of the best cityscapes and landscapes in Wales, including the gorges of the Brecon Beacons and the breathtaking view from the top of Snowdon.

Bangor University welcomes back an old friend
A delegation from East China Normal University (ECNU) has visited Bangor University to see the facilities on campus and to meet with staff.ECNU is one of China’s most prestigious Universities, with a strong research culture and over 49,000 students studying subjects from over 18 schools and colleges. Bangor University has previously collaborated with ECNU on research, publications and Business School programmes.

The key objectives of the visit where to further explore collaborative opportunities for student exchange, research and joint degree programmes. The delegation had discussions with several research leaders from the Schools of Business, Psychology, Education and Ocean Sciences as well as a meeting with Vice Chancellor Professor John G. Hughes, at which a new Memorandum of Understanding was signed.
ECNU President, Professor Yu Lizhong commented, “Coming to Bangor University to explore the opportunity for future collaboration has been just like coming to see an old friend”
Vice Chancellor Professor John G. Hughes commented, “Bangor University looks forward to a strategic relationship with ECNU which will provide greater study and research opportunities for students and staff from both Universities.”

Outstanding American students will visit Bangor University
Bangor University is delighted to be hosting eight of the USA’s brightest students as they study Wales’ culture, history, politics and landscape at a pioneering new Summer Institute. Bangor University has been appointed by one of the most prestigious
US-UK educational organisations, the Fulbright Commission to run the first Wales Fulbright Summer Institute, along with Cardiff and
Aberwystwyth universities.

While at Bangor the students will study the events, places and people that have shaped Wales, and the crucial influence industry has had on all of them. They will explore the impact of such industries as tourism, slate mining and highland agriculture, and how a small nation can maintain its identity in a global era.Each section of the course involves coursework, cultural events and
visits to historic sites in order to experience and gain an understanding of the distinctive regions of Wales.
The Fulbright Commission has been
promoting peace and cultural understanding through educational scholarships for more than 60 years. The Summer Institutes are a new initiative, designed to introduce students to the United Kingdom, while also developing and encouraging leadership.
Developing Relationship with Guru Nanak Education Foundation
Professor Gujral, Director of Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Information Technology, visited Bangor University in June.
This institution is one of 9 Guru Nanak colleges in Northern India with a total of 7,200 students at Bachelor and Masters level.
The colleges are affiliated to a network of 16 Guru Nanak secondary schools that deliver the Indian secondary school syllabus.
The visit was very successful and Bangor Business School and the Law School have agreed to develop articulation agreements and a new Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Vice-Chancellor. Bangor hopes to collaborate with the Guru Nanak Education Foundation on a number of other programmes in the future.
Bangor University welcomes Chinese delegation
Bangor University was the location for a study tour of a delegation from the Chinese Education Ministry and a number of Chinese Universities wanting to learn how British universities contribute to developing the regional economy.

The delegation was welcomed to Bangor by Vice-Chancellor, Professor John G Hughes and spent the day studying how different initiatives at Bangor University that promote entrepreneurship and regeneration within the region. They also heard the case from Welsh Government on the impact that universities can have on their regional economies.
“We were delighted to have the opportunity to welcome such influential guests to Bangor and to showcase how we work with other agencies to support business in the region,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor John G. Hughes.
In his opening address, Vice-Chancellor Hughes stressed the importance of the University’s excellent links with local authorities- such as their involvement with the Anglesey Energy Park, and, its commitment to growing small businesses, the back bone of the regional economy through schemes which enable small companies to access expertise at the University to help them develop their business.
Come and Visit Bangor Business School's London Centre
The Bangor Business School London Centre has announced the dates of its first ever Open Days.
Taking place on Thursday 30th June, Friday 22nd July, Wednesday 24th August and Thursday 8th September, the Open Days will offer an invaluable opportunity to
meet the staff and to take a look around the facilities at London’s impressive Broadgate Tower. Staff will be at hand to answer questions and to offer advice on everything from accommodation and applying to course structure and learning resources.
Anyone who has applied or is considering applying to the London Centre is invited to register for any of the Open Days.

The three year BA in English Language
Studies is specifically designed for

It provides training aimed at bringing
students up to a near-native level of
English upon ompletion, as well as
training in a wide range of aspects of
the English language and English
linguistics.
Training includes sociolinguistic aspects of English, the grammar, sound system
and semantics of English, the history of
English, as well as issues pertaining to
English and globalisation, language
planning and policy, and educational
language.
The course also offers the option of
certification in TEFL (a Bangor
