IT Services are introducing a service called Hwylus/Streamline and the overall aim of the new service will be to streamline our support of desktop computers across the campus, partially by automating routine processes, by enabling users to do more themselves within a controlled framework and by pro-actively monitoring systems for signs of things going wrong before they actually do.
The benefits are that we will be able to deliver software updates more efficiently and have better inventory information about the computers. Apart from a yellow, circular icon appearing in the System Tray (by the clock) on your computer, there should be little noticeable effect. Future development will allow us to fully update and manage all University desktops and laptops, including upgrading operating systems whilst preserving user settings.
As happened with the Active Directory project, the system has been in use within IT Services for some months and we're now ready to roll the system out further.
- Initially, the packages to be managed by the Software Delivery component will include
- Firefox & Thunderbird
- Adobe Reader
- Flash & Shockwave Players and SVG Viewer
- Java Quicktime and other essential applications.
Over time, this list will be extended to cover all site-licensed software, including Microsoft Office and SPSS, possibly with an "install-on-demand" web interface. Other components of the system will be brought on line as resources permit and further messages will follow about those.
