Swine Flu: Working from home

Many of the tasks you perform while in the university are now possible to complete remotely from home. This page provides links and guides to help you work from your home computer.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of Swine Flu you should follow the advice given on the Registrar's web pages.

E-mail

You can access your e-mails using the following methods at home:

M and U Drives

In order to access your M and U drives from home, you will need to download and install an application called WinSCP (Windows users) or CyberDuck (Mac).

Applications

Many applications you make use of in the university can also be accessed from home using DesktopAnywhere.

In addition, staff can connect to the “Bangor University Staff Desktop”. This gives you a connection to a computer which has Office, Firefox, Thunderbird and all the general software available and allows you to work as if you were sat at your desk, with full access to your M: and N: drives. This prevents the problem of having different versions of documents at home and at work, and also the risk of having sensitive work documents on your home computer. If you have specialist software installed on your office computer, we can even arrange for you to access that from home, but it has to be left switched on. Contact the IT Service Desk for advice.

Staff members can also purchase the following software from I.T. Support:

  • Microsoft Office 2007 (£15)
  • Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac (£15)
  • Microsoft Office Project 2007 (£15)
  • Arcview 9.3 (£10)
  • SPSS (£5)
