SOPHOS Antivirus

The University has a site licence for Sophos Anti-Virus. The licence covers all University computers together with those belonging to staff and students of the University. Versions of Sophos are available for Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Windows 98/Me and Mac OS X.

The newest version of Sophos has a blue shield logo like the image above. The earlier version of Sophos had a red streak logo, and was often used in conjunction with the Remote Update program (flower logo) on home computers and laptops. The new version combines the remote update capability into the main program.

Before installing Sophos on a computer, you should ensure that no other anti-virus program is installed already. If you have Norton, McAfee, PC-Cillin or some other program installed already, you should remove those before installing Sophos. Also, if you have the old version of Sophos (perhaps with Remote Update) installed on Windows 95/98/Me, you must uninstall those before installing the new version. (This does not apply with Windows 2000/XP/Vista - the new version will safely remove the old as part of the installation.)
