Mairwen Owen was educated locally and at Liverpool Polytechnic where she gained a HND in Business Studies. She obtained a BA in Social Sciences from the Open University and also completed an MSc(Econ) Information and Library Management degree by distance learning from Department of Information Studies Aberystwyth.

Before embarking on a career in librarianship Mairwen Owen worked for over eight years as Court Clerk/Senior Administrative Officer at the Magistrates Clerk's Office in Caernarfon. She has experience of working in public, educational and special libraries. Her previous appointments include Assistant Librarian at Coleg Menai and subject librarian (job-share) for the School of Education and the School of Sport Health and Exercise Sciences.
