What eResources are available?

The library provides access to the following electronic resources via the E-Resources pages and the library catalogue:

  • Databases
  • E-journals
  • E-books
  • Exam papers online

Who can access them?

  • Bangor University registered students
  • Employees of Bangor University

The licensing arrangements offered by providers of e-resources restrict access and use solely to current Bangor University students, faculty, and staff. Copyright and licensing restrictions prevent us from offering these resources to people not currently enrolled in or employed by the university.

What are the restrictions on using them?

Databases and electronic journals may be used for:

  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Personal educational development
  • Administration and management of the business of the university
  • Development work associated with any of the above
  • Authorised users are normally permitted to print one copy of any material retrieved for their personal study or research

Use is not permitted for:

  • Consultancy or services leading to commercial exploitation
  • Work of direct benefit to the employer of students on industrial placement or part-time courses paid for by the student's employer.

Can they be accessed off campus?

Most e-resources are available both on and off campus, any resources restricted to on campus use will be indicated in the Library Catalogue or the eResources pages.

Authentication for on campus access is normally provided via the University’s IP address which has been registered with suppliers and publishers. You will need to enter your Bangor University username and password when prompted to confirm you are a registered Bangor University user.

IP authentication is also used for off campus access where permitted in order for authentication to be granted, users are advised to access eResources via the library catalogue or eResources pages. You will be asked for your Bangor University username and password to confirm that you are an authorised user. However, if you go direct to the publisher or provider's web site you will need to click on the link that takes you to a list of institutions. Select Bangor University from the list and you should be taken to the Bangor login page.

In some cases a username and password is required for access on campus as well as off campus. This may be a Bangor University username and password or another stipulated by the service provider.

Access problems?

  • Are you on or off campus?
  • Are you a registered user with a valid Bangor University username and password plus either a current payroll or UCAS number?
  • Does the resource you’re trying to access require an username and password? Are they valid?
  • Does Bangor University subscribe to the e resource you are trying to access (search for the resource by title in the library catalogue for access information)
  • Does Bangor University have access to that particular volume/issue? – check the information in the library catalogue for that journal
  • Does the e resource you are trying to access allow remote access? – check the library catalogue or database list
  • Is a provider username and password required? -check the password list
  • Remote access to an e resource subscribed to by Bangor University and authenticated by a Proxy URL can only be accessed from home via the eResources webpages or the library catalogue
  • PDF files are sometimes problematic; in many instances the same publisher's HTML full text files will be accessible. To access the PDF version at home you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.
  • Windows 98 users may experience problems displaying PDF files within their browser. Try opening Adobe acrobat before clicking the link to the PDF.
  • Some databases only permit a limited number of users. If you are unable to access a database, try again later.
