Information Literacy

What is information literacy?

Being able to find the information you need, decide how useful it is, and use it effectively (information literacy) will be a great help to you during your time at University. Not only does the library provide much of the information you need; we also offer you help in becoming “information literate.”

How we can help

When you first come to University, we offer you a tour of the library and a presentation what the library offers. Information on tour and presentation times will be given to you by your Department. Make sure you come – we’re sure you’ll find it really useful!

An online information literacy tutorial is available to help Level 1 students make the best use of information in the modules they are studying, and is already part of some first year Bangor courses. If it isn’t yet part of your course, it’s possible to register yourself on it. Log on to Blackboard, click on the Cyrsiau/Course tab at the top of the page, type “information literacy” into the course search box, and click Go. The course should now come up on your screen. To self-register, click on Enrol, then Submit.

The tutorial explores the different types of information you may need in your course, and how to find it by using the library catalogue, locating books on the shelves, and identifying quality websites and journal articles. It also looks at evaluating the quality of the information you have found, and at using it effectively by putting your bibliography together correctly.

A post-graduate information literacy module carrying 10 credits is available for postgraduate students. Some of the module material can also be offered to students on Masters’ programmes.
