Background:
I joined Bangor University as a Lecturer in Bilingualism and Cognitive Linguistics in 2011. Before moving to North Wales, I spent three years as Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.
As an undergraduate, I read Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Lisbon and the University of Goettingen. This was followed by postgraduate work at the University of Kassel, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Cambridge, where I obtained a PhD in English & Applied Linguistics in 2008. In addition, I was Visiting Fellow at Harvard University and Visiting Academic at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
I am also an Associate Editor of Topics in Cognitive Science.
Research interests:
My research focuses on bilingual cognition, i.e. I am interested in how we acquire and process a second language. I am particularly interested in the implicit and explicit learning of languages. My work addresses questions such as the following: What role do individual differences (working memory capacity, learning style, age, etc.) play in language acquisition? How does explicit knowledge affect implicit learning? What is the role of frequency in language acquisition? What is the nature of the (implicit) learning mechanism? What role does modality play in implicit and explicit learning of language? How do we measure implicit and explicit knowledge? How are implicit and explicit knowledge represented in the mind and, ultimately, the brain?
If you are interested in pursuing a PhD on these or similar topics, please drop me a line.
I am currently working on a monograph on implicit and explicit learning for Routledge and preparing an edited volume on the same topic for John Benjamins. (Both books to appear in 2013.) I am also the co-editor of Language and Music as Cognitive Systems (Oxford University Press, 2011), Statistical Learning and Language Acquisition (Mouton de Gruyter, 2012), and Music Cognition (special issue of Topics in Cognitive Science).
