Staff Promotion

We are delighted to announce that Dr June Luchjenbroers has been promoted to Senior Lecturer (from Feb 2011). Congratulations on this very well-deserved promotion.

AHRC Award for Staff Member

Dr. June Luchjenbroers has been awarded a prestigious AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award, only the second ever to be received by the University. It will fund a full-time PhD for 3 years. The external partner is the Forensics Linguistics Institute, Powys. The project will be in the field of forensic linguistics.

New Members of Staff

Three new members of lecturing and research staff to join the School. Linguistics & English Language is delighted to welcome three new permanent members of staff: Dr. Christopher Shank, a specialist in Cognitive Linguistics, is joining the School in July, as is Dr Patrick Rebuschat, who is a specialist in Bilingualism. Dr. Vicky Chondrogianni, a specialist in Bilingualism is joining the School in September.

Dr John Olsson of the Forensic Linguistics Institute an Academic Associate

The School of Linguistics, University of Bangor is pleased to announce that Dr John Olsson is now an Academic Associate with our School.

Dr Olsson has offered guest lectures in the school in past years and is currently co-ordinating a new postgraduate program in Forensic Linguistics with Dr June Luchjenbroers.

Dr Olsson is a member of the IAFL, a member of the British Academy of Forensic Sciences and is Chair of the Forensic Linguistics Society, which is a Learned Society with the British Academy.

The School of Linguistics welcomes John into our group and looks forward to working with him in further research collaboration. The Forensic Linguistics Institute, of which he is Director, has already made available part of its corpus of forensic texts to graduate students of the School, and we are collaborating together on a number of other research projects.

AHRC funding for postgraduates

The School of Linguistics is eligible to submit up to 12 applicants to the AHRC's 2010 postgraduate funding competition. Applicants must be citizens of the EU. For more information, click here.

January 2009: Postgraduate Scholarships

The School is eligible to submit up to 12 applicants to the Arts and Humanities Research Council's (AHRC) 2009 postgraduate funding competitions.  Students wishing to apply for AHRC funding are requested to contact Prof. Ineke Mennen (for PhD study) and Prof. Vyv Evans (for MA study) as soon as possible.  Applicants must be resident of the UK/EU, and completed applications must be received no later than March 1st 2009.

Following on the appointment of Prof Vyvyan Evans as Professor of Linguistics at Bangor, we shall be introducing THREE new MA Schemes, all of which will be led by Prof Evans, to complement our existing MAs in Theoretical Linguistics and Applied Linguistics for TEFL. Read on...

'Bangor Linguistics Prof to head £5M Bilingualism Research Centre

Professor Margaret Deuchar, formerly Head of the School of Linguistics & English Language, has been appointed director of a £5M Bilingualism Research Centre based at UWB.

The new centre is jointly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.  Professor Jenny Thomas, who has taken over as Head of School, comments 'The new centre is tremendously exciting for us all. It shows that the quality of our research is second to none.'

News of the award was reported in both the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo and the Western Mail last Friday (2nd Feb).

 

New degree schemes!

From September 2007 we'll be offering nine new Joint Honours degree schemes in English Language and the following subjects: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Cymraeg, Psychology, Sociology, Physical Education and Sports Science. In addition there'll be two degree schemes with the newly established National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries: Joint Honours in English Language and Creative Studies, and English Language with Media Studies.

This year's winner of the David Crystal Scholarship is Amy Briscoe who attended Bishop Milner Catholic School in Dudley, West Midlands.  Amy is taking a degree in Linguistics and hopes to be a writer or journalist when she graduates.  The runner-up was Elizabeth Sayer.
