Thumbs Up for new HE Certificates
Wales’ Minister for Economic Development and Transport, Andrew Davies, visited Lifelong Learning at Bangor University this morning (13/11/03). He was there as guest of honour at the breakfast launch of two new Higher Education Certificates aimed at skills development for local employees. He said:
“I am very pleased to launch the HE Certificates in IT and Community Enterprise, and in Personal and Professional Skills. They have both been developed in response to the expressed needs of local employers and community groups. I have met some local employers and future students today and I am sure that everyone will benefit from the skills that will be gained through the certificates.”
Head of Lifelong Learning, Meri Huws added:
“The recently published Future Skills Wales 2003 Generic Skills Survey indicates that there are skills shortages in Wales in IT and various management areas such as leadership. Our certificates reflect this.

We have also developed them with flexibility in mind. This means that we can tailor courses to employers’ specific needs, students may also enrol for single modules, or the whole Certificate, depending on their requirements.”
In addition to providing basic and further grounding in IT skills the Certificate in IT and Community Enterprise provides modules in business, enterprise and project development and management. The Certificate will be particularly useful to people involved in community projects.
The Certificate in Personal and Professional Skills has been developed to equip people with the “soft” skills that are so essential in becoming a successful manager. Such areas as motivation, team leadership, and project management as well as basic business areas such as budget control, finance and marketing are included in the subject options students may choose.
Lifelong Learning offers bilingual bilingual delivery and support. The Certificates also fit well with existing courses available at Lifelong Learning, thus enabling students completing National Vocational Qualifications a natural progression route to expand their learning.
The first intake of students on the Certificates is planned for January 2004.

Bilingual ARrt Course Successful in Caernarfon
Friday 18 July, 2003
This week ten budding artists signed up for a summer art class with a difference that is being run in Caernarfon by the University's College of Education and Lifelong Learning.
It is the first time that a University Fine Art course has been offered bilingually in Caernarfon by the Department, which means that students can benefit from individual tuition in their preferred language.
Entitled "Life and Landscape in Caernarfon", the 8 week course has been specially designed for adults who live in the Caernarfon area. No experience is necessary, just an interest and enjoyment in making art.
Tutor Joanna Evans, a native of Rhyd-ddu now living in Brynrefail says she is very happy with the response to the course.
"We are particularly keen to involve local people in our courses and I am very pleased that there has been such an interest shown. We will be based at our studio at the Institute Building on Pavilion Hill and during the course will be working on painting and drawing techniques through life classes and using the surrounding landscape of Caernarfon."
She adds,
"Most people on the course are native Welsh speakers, but the rest are learners and I am delighted to say they have seized the opportunity to practice their Welsh whilst learning about art!"
Students completing this course can use credits earned towards a Higher Education Certificate in Open Studies.
Don't worry if you think you have missed the chance to join in the class. Joanna will be offering a weekly Life Class in the same venue starting in October and going through to March.
Further details about this and other Art courses are available from Lifelong Learning on 01248 383668.
