Single or Joint Honours
Some students want to specialise in one subject and choose to study a single honours degree. However, if you want to keep your options open you can study two subjects by opting for a joint honours degree. You can do this by taking half your modules from one subject and half from another. This is possible with a variety of different subjects at Bangor.
If you chose to study a language as a joint honours degree your course lasts for four years, with the third year being spent in an appropriate country.
We also offer a number of courses featuring a Major with a Minor subject; in which two thirds of your studies are in the Major subject and one third in the Minor one. If the Major subject is a language then the course lasts four years; courses where the Major subject is not a language last three years. In degree titles, "and" indicates joint honours, whereas "with" indicates Major/Minor.
Modules
To complete a degree course you will take modules (units of study) that add up to 360 credits over three years. If you study full time you take 120 credits in each year of study.
Semesters
The academic year is split into two semesters. The final weeks of each semester are set aside to give you time to revise and sit exams.
Year Abroad
You go abroad on placement for a year between the second and the third year which you spend in Bangor. Some three-language students also go abroad for the second semester of their second year.
Lectures
You will learn most of the theory work in lectures. They are normally presentations by academic staff given to groups of students studying the same subject.
Seminars
Seminars are more informal teaching/discussion sessions in smaller groups and involve more interaction with the tutor. Most language teaching comes under this heading.
Tutorials
In a tutorial you will meet with a member of staff either on your own or as a part of a small group. You may also need to prepare work to discuss or present.
Oral Classes
In oral classes you meet in a small group with a native speaker of the language, and work on activities to increase your confidence and proficiency in the spoken language.
