New publication to honour Welsh music scholars...

The Centre for Advanced Welsh Music Studies (CAWMS) is to produce a bilingual Festschrift to celebrate the outstanding contribution made to music in Wales by Meredydd Evans and Phyllis Kinney. The book will also be a personal tribute to Merêd and Phyllis and a mark of the great affection in which they are held by their many friends, whether within the scholarly community or beyond. The Festschrift will be published by the University of Wales Press in 2006 under the joint editorship of Sally Harper and Wyn Thomas. Articles on various aspects of music in Wales have been promised by nineteen contributors, including Hywel Teifi Edwards, R. Geraint Gruffydd, Wyn James, Daniel Huws, and Rhiannon Ifans. Two poems have also been specially commissioned from two outstanding contemporary poets: Gwyn Thomas (formerly Professor of Welsh at Bangor) and Tony Conran, whose ‘Dafydd ab Edmwnd Variations: Music’s Green Mansions’ recently received its first public reading in front of a delighted audience that included the poem’s two dedicatees. The book will also include a complete list of all the works produced by Merêd and Phyllis themselves, compiled by Huw Walters of the National Library of Wales. Orders for the book may be placed in due course with the University of Wales Press.
