ICMuS Teaching Programme

Study of liturgy continues to receive little attention in taught courses. The consequent paucity of liturgical awareness among musical scholars and practitioners demands that ICSMuS engages with education and training in worship and in music for worship. This already includes provision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Undergraduate level studies

The Certificate in Sacred Music Studies is delivered in partnership with The Royal School of Church Music, where full details of the course may be found. This is a part-time, distance-learning course with core strands of study in Ministry and Worship, Music in Worship, Church Music Practice, and Skills for Church Musicians. There is a balance of study which includes a significant portion of applied and practical work undertaken and closely related to each student’s own church.

There are plans to expand this programme to include a distance-learning foundation degree and full-time, joint honours provision at Bangor. These will not be introduced before Autumn 2009.

Postgraduate level studies

A taught postgraduate programme will be available as a Sacred Music Studies pathway within the MA in Music from Autumn 2008. This will again be focused on the student’s development in their own church, and will offer a range of studies including applied and practical options. The MA will be available on a part-time (non-resident) and full-time basis. Further details of this course will be available early in 2008.

Historical studies in sacred music can be followed through the existing MA and Diploma pathways which already include a choice of modules in Music in the Christian Church, and scope for sacred music studies within Historical Musicology, Editorial Musicology, Composition, Performance, and Music in the Community.
