Background

After having studied Musicology, Medieval and Early Modern History and Italian literature at the universities of Heidelberg and Chapel Hill (North Carolina). I was awarded a PhD in musicology, Heidelberg in 1995, with a thesis on Felix Mendelssohn's musical aesthetics. From 1995 to 2002, I worked as a research associate for the project "Cappella Sistina" of the Heidelberg Academy of Arts and Sciences and as a part-time lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. In 1998 and 1999, I was a Fedor Lynen Postdoctoral Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Urbana (Illinois), and in 2001 I obtained my Habilitation in musicology, also from Heidelberg, with a thesis on text declamation in the 15th-century motet. After having been a Visiting Professor of Music at the University of Frankfurt, I came to Bangor as Professor of Music in the autumn of 2005.

I am one of the directors of the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM), the chairman of the National Association of Music in Higher Education, the secretary of the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society and a council member of the Royal Musical Association. In Bangor, I am the founder-director of the Centre for Research in Early Music (CREaM) and also a member of IMEMS.

In 2008, I was a Visiting Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford; in 2009, I was appointed to membership of the Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences.

Teaching

I have taught on a number of subjects since 1995, mostly historical and analytical, from Gregorian Chant to 20th-Century Sonatas. In Bangor, I participate in the teaching of the first-year core module "The Study of Music" and the second-year "Writing about Music"; I also teach modules in the Genre & Composer group, such as "Bach in Cöthen and Leipzig", "Mozart's Chamber Music", and "Mendelssohn". I supervise postgraduate students in all areas of musicology and participate in teaching the postgraduate core module "Current Musicology".
