If you’re looking for unique Christmas gifts for your friends and family, look no further than Bangor University’s Student Christmas Market, which will be held on Friday, 6th December at the University’s Prichard-Jones Hall, between 12 – 5 pm.
Now an annual event with over 70 stalls offering a wide range of handmade products such as jewellery, cards, decorations, arts & crafts, knitted goods, international foods, cakes and chutneys, you’re sure to find something special.
The market is organised by the University’s B-enterprising team who help students and graduates develop their entrepreneurial skills during their time at the University through workshops and mentoring from experienced professionals.
With great demand for a limited number of stalls, students had to apply for the opportunity to run a stall to ensure that the market will have unique and quality goods on offer. The diverse range of stalls will consist of individual entrepreneurial students who have developed their own products or groups affiliated to clubs or societies who may be fundraising for their club or local charity.
The Photography Society will be selling greeting cards and prints of high quality photographs taken by talented photographers from the Society. They will also have a Santa’s grotto set up, so you can be photographed with Santa and his elves. A percentage of their proceeds will go to the Society to fund new equipment and field trips.
Psychology PhD students, Sofia Strommer and Naomi Scott, began their baking adventures as a way to de-stress, but it evolved into a passion for imaginative decorating and producing delicious cakes. They recently launched a Facebook page, F30 Bakery, to promote their products. Their stall will be selling an array of baked goods, from Christmas themed cupcakes to individual salted caramel and chocolate tortes. All profits from their stall will go to the Dystonia Society, a charity which provides support and information for individuals with Dystonia, a neurological movement disorder.
Having experience of working as a chef at a Michelin rated restaurant, Joanna Wright, a PhD Creative Studies student, will be selling a variety of her handmade chutneys, jams and baked goods. Joanna will be donating 10% of her profits to the Macmillan Cancer charity.
Ben Allinson, a Geographical Oceanography student, along with fellow students, will be raising funds to purchase a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS), Menai Bridge branch. The RIB will be used by MVS members as well as the local community to help them achieve Royal Yachting Association qualifications which will help them gain employment in the marine sector. Their stall will be selling Christmas themed, chocolate based pizzas.
During the event there will also be festive live music by student bands and the University’s catering service will supply refreshments such as mince pies and mulled wine. The best dressed stall will be awarded a prize.
The event is currently funded by the Welsh Government through the Regional Hub partnership between Bangor University and Grwp Menai Llandrillo.
