Public Procurement Event 2nd March 2012 - Are Buyers Born or Made?
Is successful procurement about having a range of skills which you can develop to get ahead or is it a question of your personality type being drawn to the profession because you have the appropriate traits to win through?
For the first pilot workshop, we are aiming to test out this proposition using some light-hearted personality tests and a competency profiling kit to look at the art of purchasing and the type of person who might be drawn to the profession or successful in it.
We are hoping participants will learn something about themselves and why they do the job they do. By exploring what it is to be a buyer the vital components of procurement competencies will be uncovered. The ultimate aim is to carry out research, develop practical solutions and deliver training events for buyers and small suppliers to improve the procurement experience. We would like this workshop to be an enjoyable and informative introduction to the WIT* project and to help us develop ideas for a procurement competency framework. It is the first in a series of workshops being planned, to achieve our project aim of contributing to the long term development of procurement staff and to inform our research. There will also be a parallel series for the small suppliers of Wales and Ireland.

North Wales’s best-known jazz pianist is joined by Iain Ballamy for a concert of music based on Roald Dahl’s Kiss Kiss stories.
Recently described by the Guardian as "enduringly innovative" Warren and Ballamy have been at the cutting edge of the UK Jazz scene for the last 20 years. Both are winners of the BBC Jazz award for Innovation, and are composers and performers whose work easily crosses the divides between Jazz, Folk and World music. Combining virtuoso improvising with deep lyicism their repertoire is influenced by music as varied as John Dowland, Hermeto Pascoal and Chopin, and always underpinned by a gentle sense of humour. They recently presented a new extended suite of Huw Warren's at London's Kings Place are also part of the trio "Quercus" with singer June Tabor.

The BLOODHOUND SSC Project is aimed at taking the World Land Speed Record into a totally new speed regime. Researchers from Swansea University are assisting the process of designing a manned vehicle capable of reaching the speed of 1000mph by 2012. This would surpass the current Land Speed Record, of 763mph, by over 30%. The Project presents the design team with massive engineering challenges, including the problem of ensuring that the car will remain stable at this speed. To assist the design team, computational fluid dynamics is being used at Swansea University to predict the overall aerodynamic behaviour of the vehicle. The lecture will describe the nature of the methods being employed and the contributions to the aerodynamic design that have been made.
Frontiers is a lecture series in which distinguished academics are invited to speak about the frontiers of research and to place their own contributions in context. Professor Morgan’s research has contributed to the emergence of the discipline of computational engineering and changed the way in which the aerospace industry uses simulation in engineering analysis and design.
The lecture will be delivered in Welsh with simultaneous English translation.

"The Integration of Multilateral Environment Agreements: Herding Cats or Building Bridges?" by Dr Richard Caddell
Bangor Law School is pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Caddell, a former staff member here at Bangor, will deliver a guest lecture on Friday 9th March 2012. The title of the lecture is "The Integration of Multilateral Environment Agreements: Herding Cats or Building Bridges?", and is based on an article that will be appearing in this year's Yearbook of International Environmental Law. Dr. Caddell's paper examines the various mechanisms that treaties have established in order to synchronise working relationships, strategic directions and cooperative policies in the context of the fragmentation debate. It uses some of the cluster-based environmental regimes to provide case studies of how MOUs between treaties have worked (and why they often have not) and the emerging trend towards linkages between the executive bodies of treaty structures – and why the current fragmentation emphasis on successive treaties and conflict resolution is probably unlikely to be of any great practical assistance to most modern regimes. While the paper is based in environmental law, there are a lot of wider lessons to be drawn from these institutions across the various strands of international law, in an era of increasing regionalisation.

Time: 02:00:00 PM
Location: Cwm Idwal
The excursion to Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia will focus on two specific periods of geological history: the Ordovician (c.450 million years ago) when the rocks of Snowdonia were formed, and the Quaternary which included the last Ice Age (peaking c.18,000 years ago) when the dominant features of the landscape were established. In the Ordovician and the Quaternary, North Wales experienced extreme environmental trauma: violent volcanic activity and deep glaciations, respectively, and this is dramatically displayed in the rocks and landscape. Cwm Idwal has played a key role in developing our understanding of both periods and has attracted the attention of important scientists, including Charles Darwin who visited the cwm twice (in 1831 and 1842).
Additional information
The excursion will take c. 3 hours. It is a pleasant walk over rough ground (no climbing or scrambling) but participants should be suitably equipped (tough footwear, warm clothes, waterproofs) regardless of the weather forecast.
This walk is suitable for children. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and supervised at all times. Children must be capable of walking the distance and be appropriately dressed

“The Friendly Face of Carbon Dioxide”
Carbon dioxide has attracted a very negative image as a “Greenhouse gas” over the last few years but it can be successfully used in many applications to replace traditional petrochemical solvents and to therefore reduce the quantity of carbon dioxide and other ozone depleting chemicals we release into the atmosphere. As a solvent CO2 is universally considered as a clean, green solvent (cheap, non-toxic, non-flammable, recyclable) and can be used for a wide range of applications including fire suppression, refrigeration, food and beverages and as a process solvent. Carbon dioxide is generated from many everyday activities and is a by-product in the chemical, brewing and biofuel industries. In commercial use, liquid or supercritical CO2 provides an alternative to conventional organic solvents for extraction and fractionation of botanical materials, reactions with conventional or bio-catalysts, product cleaning and the production of micro particles. The presentation will explain how CO2 is captured, used and recycled in an environmentally friendly way and some of the everyday applications that many of us know nothing about.

An evening of talks on Speciation and Climate change - FREE!
Come along and hear Professor George Turner talk about the spectacular speciation seen in African cichlid fishes, and then hear Professor Chris Freeman talk about the role of wetlands in climate change. Main Arts Lecture Theatre. All Welcome.
Prof George Turner, Bangor Universty, Lecture Abstract
The origin of African Cichlid fish species
Over 150 years have passed since Darwin’s Origin of Species. Biologists are still trying to understand how a species splits in two, what role the environment plays and what the molecular basis of this process can be. Even less well-understood is why some animals undergo extraordinary adaptive radiations in some places at certain times, while others clearly do not. The cichlid fishes of African freshwaters are particularly prone to spectacular adaptive radiation. Prof Turner will show films of their feeding and courtship behaviour and discuss his research into their evolution and behaviour. This research is set to enter an exciting new phase with the sequencing of several entire cichlid fish genomes and with the discovery of totally new radiations of cichlids in previously unexplored crater lakes in Tanzania.
Prof Chris Freeman
Peatlands cover just 2-3% of the Earth and yet contain almost as much carbon as our entire atmosphere. Peatlands are thus well established as powerful agents for carbon capture and storage. Prof Freeman’s studies show that peatlands sequester carbon in this way due to “phenolic inhibitors” that create an ‘enzymic latch’ that shuts down decomposition.
Increasing concern about the potentially very serious consequences of global warming has led to an explosion of interest in whether the Earth’s climate could be deliberately modified to counteract global warming and climate change, a process known as “geoengineering. Prof Freeman proposes in his lecture that peatlands offer a “Plan B” for our planet, through a valuable geoengineering approach that could potentially lock up all of the CO2 that our cars pump into the atmosphere.

Tchaikovsky: Hamlet Overture-Fantasy, Op. 67a
Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26
Dvořák: Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70
In his Seventh Symphony Dvořák cast aside his usual sunny and cheerful personality to create a drama of dark-grained swarthy tragedy. Spontaneous,
passionate and melodically inspired, Bruch’s First Violin Concerto is one of the best known and loved of all concertos, described by Joachim as rich and
enchanting. Both are heard next to the brooding romantic drama of Tchaikovsky's overture, Hamlet.

Love us or loathe us, men are everywhere. We have the habit of popping up, often unexpectedly, in your beds, wombs, wars, worst nightmares and fondest memories. We come for better, or for worse, in guises as disparate as drag artiste, soldier, priest and lover, yet apparently we all hail from Mars! No wonder being a man is problematic; it's dangerous, pressured, ridiculous, often funny and sometimes tragic, but it's also capable of being something beautiful.
A multi-layered collage of hilarious, tragic and inspirational true stories, based on the lives of men in Wales, explodes on stage using dance, physical theatre, song, drama, comedy and storytelling of the highest order. Make an evening of it with pre-show drinks from 6.45pm. An English language show for adults.
