Bangor University and Santander-Abbey have signed a three-year agreement that will lead to the provision of university scholarships, international seminars, entrepreneurial activity, business incubators and research, among other activities.
The Agreement, signed by the University Vice Chancellor Professor Merfyn Jones and by Luis Juste, Director of the Santander Universities UK & Portugal, includes provision for five postgraduate scholarships for each of the next three years for students from countries in the Santander Universities network. These countries are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela, Spain and Portugal.
Bangor University is a leading centre in the UK for research in Banking, Accounting & Finance (rated top in the UK in the recent Research Assessment Exercise), but the Agreement embraces study in numerous subjects.
Signing the Agreement in the University's Council Chamber, Professor Merfyn Jones said: "We are delighted to co-operate with Santander-Abbey in a way that will bring significant benefits to our students and to our international profile"
Under the partnership, forged with Santander Universities Global Division, the University of Bangor will join the 'Santander Universities' network of over 700 universities in Spain, Portugal, Latin America, China, Morocco, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Luis Juste said: "We are delighted to welcome Bangor University to the Santander Universities network. This partnership opens a wide range of opportunities for students and staff to continue their studies and research in other countries. This will ultimately promote the transfer of knowledge between universities"
