Live Music, Film and dancing girls! A new season of entertainment planned for Bangor.

Publication date: 14/08/2009

Dyfan Roberts, Bangor University's new Arts Development Officer has been busy since his appointment in May this year planning and developing a full and exciting activity programme in Bangor covering the period autumn 2009 to Spring 2010.

Over the course of the season you will be invited to take your seats on eight alternate Friday evenings for a new cabaret season in the University's Powis Hall, featuring a wide range of live music to please every palate, circus acts and stand-up comedy- kicking off on November 6th with the "eastern" maestros "The Baghdaddies" complete with drums flutes and dancing girls!. Meanwhile at the University's John Phillips Hall every other Sunday evening a popular season of British Film classics is planned. Live drama begins with the latest irreverent Theatr Bara Caws show at Bangor Railway Club on September 22nd, followed by Arad Goch's youth drama, and "Panic Puppets" for primary children in Coleg Menai's "Safle Friars site". Towards Christmas the Bangor festivities will feature an unique and intriguing street theatre/art installation happening right on the High Street. Events planned for Spring 2010 include a family-friendly storytelling festival and a wild Latin Party to end the season.

Details of these activities as well as other forthcoming Bangor events will be published in an all-encompassing 3-monthly free brochure, due for wide distribution in September 2009 and January 2010. The brand name will be PONTIO, meaning, in Welsh, "to bridge"- bridging between the University and the people of Bangor, and between bodies and individuals promoting the arts in the area. The brochure will provide a wealth of at-a-glance information about events-strands in and around Bangor, including the city's top quality classical series "Music at Bangor" the University's 125th birthday celebrations including a gig with Wales's world-famous "Super Furry Animals, Cob Records' regular roots nights at the Vic in Menai Bridge, Poetry and Music at the Blue Sky Café, Byd Mawr's world music events at Hendre Hall, and a variety of other local events and programmes.

The brochure will present itself in a new web-site to be launched soon under the site-name Pontio.info, where other Bangor cultural events such as art exhibitions and public lectures will be regularly updated and linked, with full details of booking times, locations and ticketing.

"It's hoped that the co-ordination and promotion of these events will not only spark the interest of Bangor people, but will also pave the way in terms of support and involvement towards the establishment of an exciting new theatre and innovation centre in the middle of Bangor city," commented Dyfan Roberts.

The PONTIO programme is supported by Bangor University, The Arts Council of Wales and Cyngor Gwynedd.
