A major £23.6m investment to expand the commercial marine sector in Wales by increasing collaborative research projects between business and universities has been announced today (Weds 8th Sept) by Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones.
Bangor University's SEACAMS (Sustainable Expansion of the Applied Coastal and Marine Sectors) project has been given the go-ahead following EU backing of £12.6m from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government.

Dr Jerry Hunter, a reader in the School of Welsh, is the winner of the Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod Prose Medal, one of the three main literary prizes awarded during the National Eisteddfod week. This year's Prose Medal was presented for a volume of creative writing of no more than 40,000 words on the subject 'Adfywiad' (Regeneration). Jerry's novel, entitled Gwenddydd, relates to the experiences of a brother and sister during the Second World War and draws heavily on the earliest Welsh traditions concerning Myrddin (Merlin).

An exciting new project was launched at the Centre for Welsh Medium Higher Education’s stand at the Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod recently. The ‘Higher Education Terminology’ project aims to establish and develop a series of online subject dictionaries to coincide with the priority areas in the Welsh medium higher education national strategy. The project will also feed into the work programme of the proposed federal college.

Bangor University will soon be welcoming back alumni who graduated in the 1970s from the then University College of North Wales, Coleg Normal and St Mary's College. The reunion will run over two days from Friday 20 August to Saturday 21 August 2010. Guests are welcome and accommodation is available at the University. The weekend includes a buffet lunch, reunion dinner, presentations, tours and of course the opportunity to meet up with old friends. The two day event may be booked or alternatively it is possible to book the reunion dinner only.

Hywel Williams MP is to join the launch of a Welsh booklet 'Deall y Jargon' at Bangor University's pavilion at the National Eisteddfod at 2.00 on Tuesday 3 August. The booklet (a translation of 'Jargon Buster') will be of interest to anyone who wants to see an improvement in standards and the effectiveness of health and social care services in Wales. There will also be an opportunity to question a panel of experts regarding taking an active part in research in the field.

Delegates from academic institutions and research agencies across the UK gathered together with Welsh Assembly government representatives in Bangor on 14th July to attend the first introductory workshop for systematic reviews in the field of environmental management. Systematic reviews use rigorous and transparent methodology to synthesise the available evidence on an issue of concern to provide reliable, evidence-based support for practitioners and policy makers. Following the success of the Bangor event, the Centre for Evidence-Based Conservation (CEBC) training team will repeat the workshop at a more central UK location at the University of Reading on the 14th September.

People are increasingly encountering 'human genetics' in different situations, such as being offered genetic tests for themselves or their families within the health service, or being able to go online and buy a number of genetic tests directly from companies. Many are concerned at the civil liberties implications surrounding the Police's DNA database or wider issues such as human cloning. More of us are finding ourselves questioning social, ethical and policy implications as we face these issues.

An excavation of the enigmatic Pillar of Eliseg, a ninth-century AD stone monument which stands on a mound near Valle Crucis Abbey Llangollen, in north-east Wales, should reveal more about the Pillar, and also the mound or 'barrow' on which it stands. The excavation could also reveal whether the site dates back to the Bronze Age.

Sustainable individual creativity and the ethos of practice-led instruction over six years study by five dedicated new practitioners is displayed in Oriel Bangor. Andrew Smith, Lifelong Learning Fine Art Academic Co-ordinator at Bangor University has been granted a public art commission to produce two artworks for the Splott Road Railway Bridge in Cardiff. Andrew was chosen following a process of public consultation which received 150 responses. The commission is currently being implemented and the 33 metre Railway Bridge is being painted to the exact design specification of the chosen art work.

Sports Science student Joe Kendall, 20, from Lincolnshire, along with fellow Bangor University students Sam Clegg and Rich Kemble, are flying out to Nepal in the North of India at the end of March to raise awareness of the Swift Water Rescue role played by the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team. They also hope to raise money towards equipment such as throwlines, floating rope and reaching poles that are currently on the rescue team's wish list.

Bangor University has cut through traditional academic boundaries to get over 40 students from different subjects working together to compete for a new 'Enterprise by Design' challenge.
The Enterprise by Design teams, made up of a mix of psychology, electronic engineering, design and business students, were challenged to design a new product for the home or outdoors.
Having followed a six week intensive course, the teams 'pitched' their new products to an expert panel. The winners, 'Team Geranium' developed a multi-functional bag that transforms into a camping mat. They received the first prize of £2,500.

A piece of music that could be described at the 'Holy Grail' of Welsh classical music is set to be heard again. Grace Williams' Missa Cambrensis is well-known among Welsh classical music fans – even though few have ever heard it. It has been performed only once: in 1971. It is one of ten works by the composer to feature in a new edition of her music to be launched on St. David’s day this year.

The Language Technologies Unit at Bangor University's Canolfan Bedwyr, and Semantise Ltd., a communications and data management software company, have together won a prize for their pioneering Knowledge Transfer Partnership project. In an award ceremony in Swansea recently, they won the award for the first short KTP throughout Britain to be successfully completed under the Government's new sKTP pilot scheme. This is a new scheme whereby universities can work with SMEs to enable the development of new products within short timescales, or lay the foundation work for longer-term projects.

A carol composed by a Bangor University student was performed for the first time last night. It was sung by Welsh pop singer Elin Fflur at the Daily Post S4C Thousands of Christmas Voices Concert in Llangollen. It will also be broadcast as part of that Concert on S4C over the Christmas period. The carol, composed by Ynyr Llwyd, from Prion, Denbighshire, won the Carol Competition run in association with the Concert.

Carbon labelling could unfairly disadvantage economies in the developing world, and mislead consumers, according to an interdisciplinary project carried out by the UK Research Councils' Rural Economy and Land Use Programme.
Researchers at the universities of Bangor and Surrey have investigated the wider implications of including details of carbon footprints on food labels. They found that current approaches to carbon labelling may not be an accurate guide to sustainability, and might have serious and unintended consequences for poorer countries.

Teams of students at Bangor University will be loaned £10 and challenged to make a profit in just one week.
Through funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, four students at Bangor have been tasked with organising this challenge where student teams have a week to make as much money as possible from £10. The student participants will make the most of their own skills and talents and experience at first-hand what it's like to turn an idea into a real money-making project. The students will develop essential skills such as team working, commercial awareness, risk management and financial awareness. Prizes will be given to the most money made in a week from the initial £10 investment and for the most innovative and creative ideas.

A £33 million programme, which provides hundreds of scholarship opportunities to develop the skills needed to drive Wales' Knowledge Economy forward, will be unveiled by the Welsh Assembly Government today [19.11.09] at Bangor University.
The Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) programme will provide over 400 PhD and Masters places over the next five years to develop higher level skills through collaborative research projects with Welsh companies.
Each scholarship will provide an annual bursary of up to £13,300 as well as research and business training tailored to each individual.

The School of Creative Studies and Media's 125th Anniversary Event was a smash hit, packing the spacious John Phillips Hall to capacity. Students, staff, and local community members alike arrived early to hear Production Designer Edward Thomas chat about his work building the worlds of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
A row of awe-inspiring props greeted the audience as they took their seats, from the Cyberman head to the sonic screwdriver, the actual screwdriver used in close-up glam-shots. In contrast, Edward was very down to earth, and began the afternoon by describing his Welsh background and education in theatrical design at Glamorgan University.

The School of Welsh was visited recently by one of its most prominent former students, Alun Ffred Jones, A.M. for Arfon and Minister for Heritage in the Welsh Assembly Government.
It was a busy day for Mr Jones. During the morning he gave a talk to undergraduate students who are studying Language Planning as part of their BA Welsh degree scheme. Mr Jones has direct ministerial responsibility for the Welsh language in the Assembly Government, and with a new Welsh Language Act on its way, it was an opportune time for him to discuss language planning issues with students at Bangor.

A new book tracing the fascinating history of Bangor University is published this week.
Written by the University Registrar, Dr David Roberts, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the University, the book traces its rise from modest beginnings in October 1884 as the ‘University College of North Wales’, with just 58 students in the Penrhyn Arms, to an independent university with degree-awarding powers and 13,000 students and staff.

Bangor University's first ever Pianist in Residence, Sholto Kynoch, rounded off his residency in style with a high-profile event on the closing day of the Oxford Lieder Festival, on Saturday 31st October 2009. Together with Dr Helen Abbott (School of Modern Languages) and Dr Chris Collins (School of Music), Sholto presented the outcomes of his residency which had taken place in the School of Modern Languages at Bangor University from January--October 2009.
Speaking at the event at St Hilda's College, Oxford, Sholto said, "Before coming to Bangor, my knowledge of how to analyse how French poets such as Baudelaire are set to music was limited. From working with Helen and Chris, I have gained valuable knowledge which I can now put into practice."

Jules Boykoff (USA) has written poetry collections Hegemonic Love Potion (Factory School, 2009) and Once Upon a Neoliberal Rocket Badge (Edge Books, 2006). As well as being a poet he has published critically on the mass media, advised the UN on climate change, and been a professional soccer player. He teaches political science and writing at Pacific University in Oregon.

Professor Gareth Edwards-Jones of Bangor University has been appointed by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn to a new Task Force to help England to grow and eat more fruit and vegetables and improve the nation's health.
Professor Edwards-Jones, of the University's School of Environment, Natural Resources & Geography, joins growers, retailers, consumers and other agricultural researchers on the Fruit and Vegetables Task Force. The group will develop an action plan to increase the production and consumption of fruit and vegetables in England.

A hidden and precious treasure of medieval Bangor, a unique, decorated, hand-written book called the Bangor Pontifical, is to be made universally accessible as part of Bangor University's 125th Anniversary Celebrations, by kind permission of its owner, Bangor Cathedral.

Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, Pro Vice Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) at Bangor University has been elected President of the Society for General Microbiology from September for 2 years.
The SGM was founded in 1945, with Sir Alexander Fleming as its first President. It is now the largest scientific society for microbiologists in Europe with over 5000 members from over 60 countries. The Society owns and publishes four leading scientific journals. Professor Lappin-Scott is the 26th President, only the second woman President and the first to come from Bangor University!

Following the sad death of its founder, Professor Tim Miles last December, the Bangor University's Dyslexia Unit is to be re-named as a commemoration of his pioneering work in the field. It will be known as the Miles Dyslexia Centre - Canolfan Ddyslecsia Miles, and the re-launch under the new name will take place on Saturday October 24th at the Centre's Conference, Dyslexia and Literacy - Looking to the Future.
The Conference will consist of talks and workshops on the topics which first roused Professor Tim Miles' interest and professional curiosity - the puzzling difficulties that some children - and even adults - have when they try to read and write. Professor Andrew Pullin has been invited to deliver the prestigious Gerhard Herzberg Lecture at CarletonUniversity in Ottawa this November.
Established in 1975 by the Faculty of Science, this lecture honours Gerhard Herzberg, a former Chancellor of Carleton University and recipient of the 1971 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. A new Institute, the Research Institute for Visual Computing in Wales (RIVIC) was launched at the National Assembly for Wales this week (21.9.09).

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of both the death of Joseph Haydn and the birth of Felix Mendelssohn. To commemorate these dual anniversaries the Benyounes String Quartet will be playing in a concert in Bangor University's Powis Hall at 8pm on Monday 29 June 2009.
Formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2006, the quartet have been recipients of numerous prizes and recently toured the Channel Islands, France and Northern Ireland. The Quartet's viola player, Sara Roberts, comes originally from Llanfairpwll.

A choir who are learning Welsh through Lifelong Learning at Bangor University have won a major prize at Anglesey's Eisteddfod recently. They came first in the under 30 voices competition, and in the wake of their excellent performance, their conductor, Elwyn Hughes, won the Gold Baton, which is awarded to the Eisteddfod's best conductor.

This year's Len Beer Memorial Lecture will be with the founder member of the Dutch Rock Garden Society. He will be talking about endemic alpines on the Bale Mountains in Ethiopia and on Mount Kenya. Highlights are the giant Lobelias which can reach over 6m!
Harry Jans lives in Loenan in the Netherlands with his family. His fascination with alpine plants started on a vacation to Switzerland in 1981 where he promptly joined the Alpine Garden Society (AGS) to increase his knowledge and exchange experiences with other members and contacts. He has since built his own collection using this crucial exchange of information through the AGS and has been a rock gardener for more than 25 years.
The Dutch Rock Garden Society ("Nederlandse Rotsplanten Vereniging"-N.R.V.) was founded on September 21, 1985. At its inception, the group numbered about 40 members, but now there are approximately 700. These members are not exclusively Dutch, but also Belgian, German, Danish etc
Harry's own garden is influenced by many different ideas that he has collected through his extensive visits to gardens at home and internationally. He has been fortunate to travel to Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America. He has been part of AGS expeditions to China and Iran. As a tour leader/organiser he has travelled to China, Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany and Italy to see alpines in their natural environment.

Well, at the moment we all have an opportunity to express our views and have them taken into consideration in answering these big questions: That's the task set to a body called the All Wales Convention.

Nature fans from across north Wales recently enjoyed an ecology day school run by the School of Lifelong Learning at Bangor University. The day school aimed to provide those with an interest in the natural world the opportunity to develop their skills in identification and understanding of ecology and conservation. NIECI's Research Centre for Games and Virtual Environments (Dr Astrid Ensslin and Dr Eben Muse) is hosting an international conference, Creating Second Lives: Reading and Writing Virtual Communities. Talks will be focusing on how alternative identities and communities are formed and received in video and massively multiplayer online games as well as virtual worlds such as Second Life.
Keynote speakers will include Espen Aarseth, co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Gamestudies.org and author of Cybertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature, and Fred Hasson, founding CEO of TIGA, the UK Games Development Trade Association.
The event will also see the launch of the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds (Intellect), which is edited by Dr Ensslin and Dr Muse and will be published three times a year.

Agnieszka Kuciak's first collection of poems, Retardacija (Retardation, 2001) was a major poetry debut of the 1990s. She is also well regarded for her translation of Dante's Inferno and Purgatory, and Petrach's sonnets. Tomasz Rózycki has published six books of poetry, including S'wiat i Antys'wiat (World and Anti-world, 2003) and Kolonie (Colonies, 2006), and the epic poem Dwanas'cie Stacj (Twelve Stations, 2004).

In a major initiative to tackle the future health time-bomb posed by Europe's obese children, The European Commission has proposed a €156 million per year scheme that could change the eating habits of 26 million children across Europe. The plaque will be officially unveiled by Gwydion Thomas, the poet's son, at a short ceremony on the morning of Saturday, 14 June, at 11 am. The World Education Centre (WEC), the Bangor University-based Development Education Centre, is among 26 new project recipients sharing a £5.5m Government funding boost. The Arts and Humanities Research Council has awarded £50,000 to Professor Duncan Tanner to deliver a nationwide postgraduate training scheme for modern and contemporary historians. It will be delivered through four one day workshops, held in Manchester and repeated in London. It is available free of charge to PhD students, and runs in the academic year 2008-9.

Professor Steve Hopper, Director of world-renowned Kew Royal Botanic Gardens Bangor University's Treborth Botanic Garden recently and planted a special oak tree at Treborth Botanic Garden -- a Japanese oak donated to Treborth by Kew's own Horticultural Diploma students in thanks for the field course delivered to them each autumn by Bangor University's botanic garden staff and its Friends.
Professor Hopper deliver the annual Len Beer Lecture, which was a significant statement on evolutionary biology and conservation biology by the man in the driving seat of the world's most influential botanic garden.

Bangor University's Computer Science MSc students have been experiencing the virtual world of Second Life. Dr Robert Gittins from IT Wales (a European Objective1 ESF funded organisation with a base at Bangor University in order to broker collaboration between industry and academia) created two experimental Lecture areas for Software Developers on land in Second Life and opened the facility to the Computer Science students. The new Management Centre hosted the students in their recently opened training suite.

A total of 64 Learning Coaches are set to be the first in North Wales to complete an accredited course especially designed to support their work. The Learning Coaches are taking part in an all-Wales programme funded by the Welsh Assembly Government. A new centre, the North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health and social care (NWORTH), will increase the quality and quantity of evidence available to guide those responsible for deciding which services and treatments to provide.

A new European project is set to improve security for travellers using European airports and other large public spaces. The project will develop sensors capable of detecting a wide range of toxic agents which could be used in chemical, biological or terrorist attack. The system will be designed for use at airports and other public spaces. The project is based on nano-scale biosensor technology recently developed at Bangor University.

The British Society of Gerontology Conference, The Ageing Jigsaw: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Old Age is being hosted by the University's Centre for Social Policy Research & Development, 7-9 September. The Conference draws on a wide spectrum of expertise from outside the normal bounds of gerontology, or the study of ageing, including contributions from exercise scientists and psychologists at the University of Wales, Bangor.

It is due in part to this and to the research in this area at the University of Wales, Bangor that an international conference to discuss various aspects of ageing and care of an ageing population is being held at the University of Wales, Bangor. Assembly Minister for Older People and Deputy Health & Social Care Minister Mr John Griffiths AM will address the Conference at 5.45 on Thursday 7 September.

A series of developments at the University is being hailed as the beginning of the most exciting period in the University's history.
A total of £67 million is being invested in new posts as well as new research and teaching facilities, with more to follow.
Bangor is in the process of appointing over 50 new academics including 23 professors in the University's biggest academic expansion for decades. £10 million is to be invested over the next four years in what has been described as one of the most significant steps for Higher Education in Wales over recent years

Power, Politics and County Government in Wales: Anglesey 1780-1914 (Studies in Anglesey History, Vol11) is a study of local government in Wales, focussing on nineteenth century Anglesey. The author, Wil Griffith, is a native of Anglesey and Senior Lecturer in Welsh History at the History & Welsh History Department.

The 'live' seminar by Professor Shore, which is also available online, is at the invitation of IET.tv an online broadcast facility owned and run by the Institution of Engineering & Technology. Professor Shore will be discussing the work of his research group on developments in the secure transmission of confidential and sensitive information via existing optical communication systems.
