The Bangor Imaging Unit was officially opened on 19th October 2007 at Bangor University's School of Psychology. The centrepiece of the unit is a 'new' generation 3T MRI Scanner, representing £1.5m of over £2m that to date has been invested in the Unit which houses this and related equipment.
The new Brain Imaging facility will have a significant impact on cognitive neuroscience in Bangor and across Wales through the Welsh Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience. The equipment will be used for both academic and clinical research. MRI is a very versatile technology, which can give detailed information about the structure and function of almost any type of tissue in the body. Researchers in the School of Psychology use it to study the brain mechanisms involved in perception, cognition, emotion, language and the development of mental abilities. There is also a large research programme into the make-up of the brain and related neurological and psychiatric disorders.
